ROK Drop Movie Review: Emperor of the Sea

For Christmas I bought my wife the Emperor of the Sea DVD series that she had been hinting she wanted. It took me a while to find a copy of the movie because the usual online movie sites I go to were all sold out of this series. I actually had to get somebody I know in Korea to help me out. I bought my wife all 51 episodes of the series for $200. Kind of pricey, but it’s Christmas. Usually I don’t pay too much attention when my wife is watching Korean dramas. I sat through a few episodes of Winter Sonata, which I bought for my wife last Christmas, and that was enough for me.

However, watching the first five episodes of Emperor of the Sea, I have to say it is really quite good. Emperor of the Sea is based on a novel by Choi In-ho. His novel is loosely based on the real life exploits of Jang Bo-go (?~846), a famous figure in Korean history who dominated the seas of East Asia during the Unified Shilla Dynasty (676~935). Jang Bo-go also eliminated pirates in the Wando area, which was a geographically important sea route during the time. He also established sea trade across east Asia from Tang dynasty China to Japan. At least that is what the back cover of the DVD set says.

In the first few episodes I have watched it has focused on Jang Bo-go’s childhood growing up as a slave ship builder on Wando island and his determination to rise above being a lowly slave. He secretly studies martial arts and ends up being falsely accused of aiding pirates that raided Wando island by a yangban’s son who was jealous of Jang’s martial arts skills. He is pardoned from execution because he saved the yangban’s daughter during the pirate attack, but is instead exiled to work as a slave on a horse farm. There he continues to study martial arts and improve his skills. He hopes to escape slavery by competing in a martial arts tournament in Kwangju sponsored by a noblewoman who uses the tournament to hire new soldiers for her own personal security contingent.

The drama is beautifully shot, with well develop characters, and a engaging story line. The fighting scenes are similar to what you see in Hong Kong movies such as, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I know some people are annoyed by that kind of action scenes, but I found the scenes well done in this series so far. If you have ever wanted to watch a Korean drama stay away from the Winter Sonata clones and I recommend watching this one.

UPDATE: Since writing this posting I have watched all the episodes of the drama and it was excellent. I have also since visited Wando Island and did my own Jang Bogo tour.

You can see pictures of Wando Island here and here.

Pictures of the movie sets on Wando Island can be view here.

Pictures of the real Cheonghaejin Island can be viewed here.

Hadn't even heard of Emperor of the Sea, but I did watch a few sappy episodes of Winter Sonata and would generously give it one star out of five.

I tried watching the TV drama on Yi Sun-sin, but was turned off immediately. And, according to South Korean naval historians I talked to, the drama was utterly sh– when it came to the portrayal of the naval battles. I certainly hope they did a better job with Jang Bo-go's story.

Also, if you want to watch a trashy-but-controversial drama, check out Love and War (사랑과 전쟁). It's about South Korean divorce cases, and each episode is on a new case. It's been on KBS for years now, and you can watch older shows through KBS' website. All based on true stories, or so they say.

So far Emperor of the Sea has been quite good, Yi Sun-shin I haven't seen yet but if the historical aspects of it are as crappy as you say I may just avoid that one.

This is the 3rd Korean drama series I've watched so far, and it is the BEST. I learned about this after watching and felt in love with actor Song Il Gook in Jumong. These series had change my view of Korean drama and I was amazed how good they could be. I can't describe in words how much I enjoyed this series, all I can say is no other drama has as much affect on me.

I agree with Sonagi on that gayboy Yonsama, and I agree with mingi on that loser yi sun shint, both bad bad TV.

The title emperor of the sea does make me laugh. What "empire"? The "empire of chosun" lol

To be fair I don't know about this Bon-go fella. I suspect this is one big myth, but I am sure the TV show does a good job of copying great Chinese martial arts.

This show is just amazing OMG song il gook is the best I've watched it since a year but just can't forget it 😯 all the performance is excellent even if there are some jealous ones who can't admit it 😡 why the chines are so harsh vs Korean i've remarked it in many websites in thier comments about some korean drama, I think that they wont the world discover their bloody history with the small people of korea, I think and 'i'm sure that korean are the best looking asian ever and I loved them throught thier drama, the technic of korean martial art and the chines one are diffrent, even an ignorant one like me can remark it 👿

I really enjoyed Emperor of the Sea, but my all time favorite is Dae Jo Young. The drama of Dae Jo Young was inspiring to me. Frrom a military point of view, one could see the functions of G1, G2, G3, and G4, G5. I like Dae Jo Young because he always reconned his OBJ and went into every battle with a good plan, but most of all, no matter how much he was outnumbered, he never gave up and took care of his men.

Yi Su Shin was very good too. But hey, I like war movies.

Both of these movies demonstrated military leadership qualities that any professional soldier would be wise to emulate.

n my opinion the producer did nothing wrong with cast and character selection.many people may disagree but in my thought it was a good selection because yum moon due to his fair complexion didn't looks to me favorable choice for playing the role of a slave as compared to goong bok and his pair with lady jung hwa emphasizes on the particular point that real love only depends on the purity of heart not on beautiful face and complexion. You can live a long and happy life with purified love that only reside in purified heart not with beautiful faces. That is what i learn from this Korean serial.
