New Rule Allows Illegal Immigrants to Enlist in the Military

I guess joining the military is another one of those jobs that Americans supposedly won’t do:

A small number of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally will have an opportunity to join the military for the first time in decades under a new Defense Department policy unveiled Thursday.

The new rules will expand an existing program allowing recruiters to target foreign nationals with high-demand skills, mostly rare foreign language expertise or specialized health care training.

For the first time, the program — known as Military Accessions Vital to National Interest, or MAVNI — will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16. More specifically, they must be approved under a 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA.

The new DoD policy may be the first phase of a broader governmentwide effort to ease pressure on immigrants and create new paths to citizenship. President Obama, frustrated with the failure of Congress to pass any substantial immigration reform, has vowed to aggressively use his presidential authority to change the way immigration policies are carried out. You can read more at the link, but I am sure this is just a coincidence that this was announced shortly before an election.

I have never been unclear on my negative feeling toward the poor, unskilled, and unwashed illegal immigrants in America…

…but I’m not exactly against this.

The “illegal immigrants” this applies to are those who came to America when they were children. For this reason, there is a real possibility they have been socialized mostly as Americans.

If they have a skill that is beneficial to America and are open to going into the military where they will be further socialized as Americans, it really seems there is little problem.

These are they types of immigrants who have historically strengthened America culturally and economically.

But have still broken the laws of America (…and we are not talking about jay walking), so with this mentality that our laws are meant to be avoided/broken if they some how inconvenience them, what is to keep them from breaking even more laws that might endanger our National Security?

How can they get a clearance when they clearly broke the law?

Guys, this new rule only applies to illegals who followed their parents before they were 16.

This was part of what was originally proposed in the DREAM Act. Since congress has neutered itself from working out any real legislation in the last few years it has to be done piecemeal through executive action.

JoeC: You’re telling us there is no way to blame Obammy for this? Then what is the point of any discussion?

I think it’s quite clear that we can trust the supporting documentation supplied by these illegal aliens. After all, we have a President who has a fake birth certificate (regardless of where he was born), a fake SSN, and no transcripts to prove his GPA was higher than GDB. Not to mention, whoever heard of illegal aliens committing document fraud?
