Poll Shows that US Public Supports US-ROK Alliance

A recent poll shows that the U.S. public is strongly supportive of the U.S. military’s Asia pivot:

New analysis of the Chicago Council survey results on Asian issues by Dina Smeltz and Craig Kafura shows that over three-fifths of Americans now express support for the U.S. rebalance to Asia and that American favorability toward its two closest American allies in the region, Japan and South Korea, have reached their highest levels since the poll was started. Sixty-two percent of Americans recognize that Japan is one of America’s top ten trading partners and 64 percent support a long-term U.S. military presence in South Korea. (Defense One)

Though a high percentage of the public supports troops in Korea, less people have a favorable opinion of South Korea compared to Japan:

Analysis of the Chicago Council poll results for Japan by Michael Green of CSIS underscores the high level of trust among Americans toward Japan, rating Japan fourth globally in favorability (at 62 out of 100) behind only Canada (79), Great Britain (74), and Germany (65). …………

My review of the Chicago Council poll results for Korea shows a growing gap in American favorability toward South Korea (55 out of 100) versus North Korea, which at 23 out of 100 scored the lowest favorability among nations included in the poll.

You mean Americans want to pivot away from the mid-east, who’d a thunk it? The percentages between Japan, S. Korea, and China are minimal and you left out the part about China.

“Sixty-two percent of Americans recognize that Japan is one of America’s top ten trading partners and 64 percent support a long-term U.S. military presence in South Korea. While 59 percent of Americans surveyed prioritize building the alliances over partnership with China, two-thirds of Americans continue to say that the United States should seek friendly cooperation and engagement with China.”

66.6666666667 of Americans seek friendly China engagement/cooperation while 64% support a U.S. military presence in S. Korea. China WINS! What a crock though, 64% of Americans don’t even vote because the GOP doesn’t want them to.

Besides, only 1% of the American vote really matters. Kind of like Hong Kong…

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2014/11/01/lessig-what-hong-kong-protests-should-teach-u-s/
“Well look at what’s going on in Hong Kong. They want to have a two stage election. And in the first stage, a small committee of 1,200 people get to pick the candidate. So 1,200 out of five million is about .024 percent of Hong Kong picks the candidates who get to run in the general election.
Well compare that to the American system. Any candidate who wants to run for Congress in America knows he has to raise an incredible amount of money to be able to run for Congress. Who are the funders of that campaign? It’s a tiny, tiny fraction of America, maybe about .05 percent of the relevant funders of campaigns.
So in America, like in Hong Kong, we have a two-stage process. And at the first stage, a tiny fraction of our democracy chooses the candidates who get to run, effectively, in the second stage. And so it’s just like that two-stage process in Hong Kong.”

And why is this so corrupting? Why is it that having to raise all this money from a small sliver of the public so corrupt?

“Well, just imagine you spend 30 to 70 percent of your time calling these funders, this tiny fraction of the 1 percent, to raise the money you need to fund your campaigns. As any of us would, it would develop in you a sixth sense, a constant awareness, about how what you do will affect your ability to raise money. Your focus is on the funders and not on the people.
And the point is, if the funders are not the people, which they are not when they are this tiny fraction of the 1 percent, it can’t help but corrupt the way our government functions.”
