I was assigned to the 40th Engr Co (T(C) as the Map Depot Distribution Center From 1968 to 1969, Camp Mercer had two (2) Corps of Engineer Units. They were the 547th Engr Co (FB) [Floating] [Bridge] and the 40th Engr Co (T)(C) [Topographic] [Corps.] The photo shows this. In 1988 while attending the IG course, I went to the archives of the Corps of Engineers and attempted to retrieve the 40th historical records. My search revealed that the records had been misfiled in the Vietnam War records. I had the records refiled in the Korean theater of operations.

I remember Hutchins, He was the mail guy. I was with B Co 802nd Engrs, bn was at Humphreys. Under 8th army. I was there 71-72. Race riots, a cross burning, Buldozer stolen from the Motor pool with a Tractor trailor, Contact truck stolen, and sold by the GIs for pennyies on the dollar, always blamed the Koreans…..dope and party money I found out years later, Heard Nanes fell off the back of a 5Ton dump, concusion and died, Grader trainee got crushed learning the equipment on a side job for the CO…I was TDY 6 of 12 months, went to camp Brown in Yong-jo-col, Camp Indian, and Pochon, and Incheon with the MPs… got lots of pictures of the place and guys. Purina factory just outside the gate…. Hutchins had super spit shined boots, and painted a pair with Leather Luster(Cochrans ). Hey Hutch!!!!

I was stationed with the 44th Engineers from Nov 75 to Nov 76. I was there during the “tree” incident, when we backed up the 2nd Engineer Battalion chopping the damn thing down. At on point Camp Mercer was a chemical storage facility, that’s why there’s a double barrier fence around the compound.

For those that were in the 547th (FB) 1966-68. I, Robb Curry was there at that time. Captain James R. Manning passed away in2018. He was a construction supervisor for PG &E in California. Lt Kirk Napp, has a body art business. Major Jim Ostrander (former Lt.) did 2 tours in Nam. Retired. Richard Ridle (company clerk)retired from the Catapiller company. As for me , I lost my hearing shortly after seperation due to the extreem loud noise of the generators across from the motor pool. (Retired Postal Service) Hi to you Larry Dipert and Tommy Adams if your read this missage.

I served in 40th Engr Topo from 1968 – 1969. I was operations clerk with office in the building with presses and layout trucks. I remember the big promotion party we had at the club one night. What a blast. Still have some pictures of that night. Also remember trips to ASCOM and Green Door Club. Then the trips to Yongson on payday to spend at the big PX.
