Camp Casey Elementary School to Close This Summer
|For old 2ID personnel like myself, it still seems weird to hear about an elementary school on Camp Casey. After only six years of operation the school is closing this summer:
Camp Casey’s elementary school and child development center will close this summer as U.S. forces on the Korean Peninsula relocate to Camp Humphreys.
An Installation Management Command memo, dated Jan. 28 and addressed to the parents of children stationed at U.S. facilities north of Seoul, says Camp Casey Elementary School will close in June and Child and Youth Services will end at the base July 1.
“In accordance with the 2002 Land Partnership Plan (amended in 2004), Area I is reducing in U.S. population and bases,” Col. Jack Haefner, U.S. Army Garrison Camp Red Cloud and Area I commander, said in the memo.
Camp Casey’s Department of Defense Education Activity school opened in 2010 with an enrollment of about 250 as part of U.S. Forces Korea’s plan to increase the number of command-sponsored slots on the peninsula. A new wing opened in 2011, nearly doubling the K-8 school’s capacity. However, enrollment has declined over the past year. [Stars & Stripes]

It kind of surprised me they kept the school open one more year. I thought they were going to close it last school year.
With the Army closing Yongsan, all the civilian employees will either have to put their kids into one of the Christian private schools (on the Army’s dime), or somehow send their kids all the way down to Osan. Makes for a long train ride.
My son went to ICS in Uijeonbu, but that was more for Korean kids who wanted to learn English, and NOT put up with the hyper-competitive, bullying prone Korean school system. His first year in Korea, all the kids of military affiliated parents had to send their kids to the private schools for education and indoctrination. Starting his second year he went to Casey K-8, and it was a great school! I think being away from Yongsan and some of the school politics helped, as well as not having to ride the bus for two hours, each way.
I remember a thread about the Casey school closing. I forgot how much they spent on renovations only to turn around and close it within 6 years. Wonder if there were any viable solutions that didn’t involve 2 hour bus rides for the kids.
Yay Casey finally closing! Just Deserts! 😎
Actually Ole Tanker, I think the Dongducheon area is closer to a deciduous forest type of region.
It was nice while it lasted. But Big Army has never really been Area I Dependent friendly.Optimistically maybe everyone with school age kids will be able to get employment and relocate down South.
Some times you the get the escalator. Some times you get the………………………
……….Stairs?
…the truss assembly with attached side rail tracks and comb plate interface?
When you mess with the escalator, you get the horns?
When you mess with the escalator, you get the horns?
An escalator in the hand is worth two in the bush.
The early escalator gets the worm gear.
Escalators are deadly; but sometimes funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6XvnKGhn1I&noredirect=1
A watched escalator never boils.
That escalated quickly.
No #13. A watched escalator never moves…….the sensor has to be activated.

Some times you get the escalator, sometime you get chaffed!
Ole Tanker, are you a former flyer?
Setnaffa! You caught me. I’d thought I’d fly under your radar!
I don’t tell bad escalator jokes in person because I can’t take the stares.
Escalators gonna escalate. 🙂
@18, not too likely… 😉
Well, about some things…
See you later, escalator.
After while, speed control dial.
LOL! 🙂
I like my escalators like I like my women…
…a rotating series of electrically-powered interlocking metal steps between two synchronized rubber handrails.
CH #24. Sounds like a fancy wheelchair with leather cushions. I can imagine you getting into that kind of thing!
Q: What do you call a dyslexic escalator with identity issues?
