Seoul American High School Proposal To Mandate School Uniforms Leads to Heated Debate
I like school uniforms considering some of the people I see now a days dressed like slobs going to school. School should be a professional learning environment which school uniforms help create. Really the only issue I see is the cost. Whatever uniform is selected should not cost parents more than it does to buy regular school clothes:
Seoul American High School is considering a new dress code that would require students to wear uniforms.
The draft proposal prompted heated debate, with supporters saying more needs to be done to rein in students who dress inappropriately and critics calling it too strict. Many on both sides complained the uniforms would be expensive and get little use since most students will likely be moving soon as part of the relocation of most U.S. forces in Korea.
Students would have to wear collared polo or button-down dress shirts in a choice of three colors — blue, white or black — with chino-style pants, according to a draft copy obtained by Stars and Stripes.
The policy would ban shorts, skirts and jeans, as well as flip flops, shoes with wheels and headgear. The principal reserved the right to make exceptions based on a student’s religious beliefs or documented medical conditions. [Stars & Stripes]

This is not a uniform requirement.
It is a dress code.
As collared shirts, dress pants, and non-athletic shoes should be in the wardrobes of all young men and women, the excuse the clothing will be wasted omce they leave Korea should be invalid… but likely isn’t… due to the low-class lifestyle they likely live in their private lives.
Wow is it the 90’s again? This is such a tired old-man conservative “idea” that it must be.
It’s not surprising at all that this is being proposed. What with DoDEA having solved all its budgetary and quality issues now ranking amongst the highest in education anywhere what else do they have to focus on?
Oh wait… None of that’s been done you say?

For those with actual attention spans… it’s nothing new to see this community posit such a tired and hypocritical idea. Remember when the USAG Hawaii commander decided to enforce dress codes on all people on-base? I do, and I also remember all the drones who powered up to support it with cries of “Appropriateness” and “Decency”.
DoDEA schools for all the fancy nomenclature are public schools and when it comes to publically funded and utilized services great care should be used when enacting restrictions better suited for private environments as you can’t speak for everyone.
Here’s the hogwash this force-feed is being advertised under:
“to promote a safe, positive learning environment and to establish reasonable standards of health and decency in our schools.”
* What’s unsafe about a t-shirt & jeans?
* How do chinos enhance one’s positivity?
* Standards of health? That’s just fah-huking insulting, are you telling me parents are dressing kids in filthy disease-ridden clothes? The `ell does that even mean?
* Decency.. there it is… well who says what’s decent? Why do they get to say? The 1st amendment of the Constitution sure doesn’t agree with that. Is there a Department of Decency with elected officials or is the decision just left up to random a-hole who happens to have a bug up their butt about something so much they’ll abuse their position to do something about it (yeah I’m looking at you USAG Hawaii).
If they really wanted to accomplish what they’re saying this junk is actually aimed at there’s a way to do it without specifying a uniform.
Where I work it’s pretty much all R&D, the only people in uniform are in lab or security attire and for valid reasons. Everyone else dresses however, ranging from hippie burnout to nerd that raided the wardrobe of Big Bang Theory. It’s a safe, positive, and beyond decent place to work.
