ROK Troops Fire Shots at Possible Drone Flying Over the DMZ
It looks like the North Koreans have flown another drone over the DMZ:
South Korean troops fired warning shots at an “unidentified object” flying across the heavily fortified border from North Korea Tuesday afternoon, the South’s military announced.
The military detected the object traversing the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) southward in the Chorwon area in the eastern province of Gangwon at around 4 p.m., according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
It added the South’s military fired warning shots along with dispatching a warning broadcast.
A defense source said the military fired more than 90 K-3 machine gun rounds, adding it may have been a drone.
The South’s military is analyzing the object and its route and has beefed up its air defense posture, said the JCS. [Yonhap]
It looks like the ROK military needs to get themselves fielded with these systems to counter the drones North Korea is increasingly using.
1. When you fire “warning shots” at a drone, who exactly are you warning?
2. The chance of shooting down a drone with 90 rounds from a K3 is just above zero… not much lower than the chance of actually hitting it. There is a better chance to hit a rice farmer in the next valley over.
3. Drones are fantastic tools at an amazing price point… perfect for North Korea. South Korea had better get on the ball with some good antidrone hardware…. or they are going to run out of ammo firing warning shots.
Hmm… When I lived in Florida, I got into RC Aircraft (the boring name before Drones became popular). There were air-to-air combat fliers. They would have their plane, a lanyard and about 15 feet of crepe paper streamer. The goal was for one pilot to chop off the tail of another. There would be six or more birds in the sky chasing one another.
Air-to-air collisions were always a spectacular sight! Balsa, servos and engines everywhere!
Might be something to consider. Launch an anti-drone aircraft and just ram the other bird. No need to get fancy and build micro-Sidewinders. But then again, no reason NOT to get fancy and build micro-Sidewinders.

2. In an unrelated story an 87 year old man only identified by his surname Kim who tends field near the DMZ has filed suit claiming some stray rounds landed near him causing undue stress.
3. Not from the company in that picture GI posted, they couldn’t even afford a proper geardo douchebag to model the equipment. Look at that scruff it’s barely noticeable.

That’s code speak for something appeared on a radar screen. No one actually saw anything. It might have been a drone. But it also might have been a balloon, small flock of ducks, or nothing at all.
