According to that report, China is cracking down hard on North Korean refugees hiding in China or using China to get to South Korea. The Chinese government has launched stakeouts and grabbing anyone that they suspect or looks like North Koreans. Many North Korean refugees have been caught and sent back. The five who were arrested and took poison was a family of a high ranking North Korean official fleeing North Korea. They would have been afraid of being tortured. As the report states, they are not the only North Koreans committing suicide after getting caught in China, and this practice is becoming more routine with North Koreans due to much harsher punishments of refugees by North Korean regime than in the recent past.
