ROK Army Faces Accusations that Bullying is Leading to Soldier Suicides

I don’t know the details for each case so maybe it is bullying, but I have to wonder how much of this bullying is actually strict military discipline being put on mandatory service draftees that are not used to such discipline?:

The recent suicide of a conscript in 22 Infantry Division has again put the spotlight on the division’s cycle of suicides because of alleged bullying.

The private first class jumped to his death on July 19 during a visit to the Armed Forces Capital Hospital.

In a suicide note, he said that every moment of his life had been agony. He apologized to his mother for his actions.

There has been a public outcry since Military Human Rights Korea (MHRK) claimed that the infantry division knew about the bullying, but did little to stop the soldier from killing himself.  [Korea Times]

These days, you can’t say a beep to these guys unless you get accused of ‘bullying’. This guy complained that the ranked officer swore at him which lead to his psychological breakdown.

Next time the superiors should ask nicely, instead of ordering their men around.

Maybe they should make sure all the soldiers have comfortable pajamas and never have to exercise, stay up late, work hard, or get up early. Maybe they should just hire DPRK soldiers to guard the RoK…

Just when I think you can’t say anything dumber than the stuff you’ve said before, you come out and set a new benchmark!

Do you dream of Trump when you sleep? He’s living rent free in your mind, day and night.

ROK soldiers before basic training were wearing make up and carrying around their man purses; how can you expect them to have any martial spirit?

nK would role over the South.

Still waiting for Melanoma to come out with her supposed “War on Social Media Bullies.”

What happened with that? Oooops, Melanoma decided against going to war with her “husband.”

America loses again with Trump, we have a do nothing “First Lady.”

My boss (when I taught English) in South Korea told me they used to have scheduled beatings, once a week or something. Like, tuesday, five o’clock, time for your beating. He superior would beat him and he would in turn beat his subordinates at some other designated time. Not sure what years he was in.

And I cannot confirm, that’s just what he told me.

Not like Michele Obama! She got a sassy new hairdo (bangs), and spearheaded all-hollow-all-the-time chicken nugget movement in schools.

A Korean friend recounted a story during his mandatory time as a police conscript.

A fellow conscript was severely beaten while in formation. He died from his injuries a day or two later. This would have been over 30 years ago.

Older NCO’s have told me that when they had served in Korea years ago, if the KATUSAs were having discipline problems, the ROK sergeant major in charge of them would visit them at the unit and beat them behind the connexes.

While I was in Korea, the KATUSAs seemed to have no fear of American NCO’s. While I doubt they were still subject to physical abuse, they seemed to give more respect to the ROK sergeant major.
