Philadelphia Council Woman Pushes Bill Targeting Korean-American Business Owners
Here is the latest social justice cause that is targeting Korean-American business owners:
Earlier this month, Councilwoman Cindy Bass introduced a bill to better regulate the hundreds of “stop and go” convenience stores that operate predominantly in Philadelphia’s low-income neighborhoods. Among its stipulations, the controversial measure would prohibit any physical barrier that separates cashiers from customers at these so-called “nuisance” establishments – including protective bulletproof glass.
According to Bass, these storefronts take advantage of the city’s lax restaurant liquor license provision while contributing to a variety of quality-of-life issues in low-income communities. Content to rely solely on the sale of cigarettes and alcohol, along with a bag of Doritos or two, many of these business owners don’t even sell the food that they advertise. [PhillyMag.com]
The councilwoman claims that these stores help promote crime because they sell alcohol and cigarettes. I find it interesting how she puts the onus on the business owners to stop crime instead of the police or the public. What else is interesting is that many of these business owners are Korean-American:
Rich Kim’s family has run the deli, which sells soda, snacks, meals and beer by the can for 20 years. He says the glass went up after a shooting and claims it saved his mother-in-law from a knife attack. Now, he may be forced to take some of the barrier down.
“If the glass comes down, the crime rate will rise and there will be lots of dead bodies,” he said.
A bill moving through city council reads: “No establishment shall erect or maintain a physical barrier.”
It’s called the ‘Stop and Go’ bill and is being offered by City Councilwoman Cindy Bass.
“Right now, the plexiglass has to come down,” she said.
She wants to put some controls on these small stores that she says sell booze, very little food and are the source of trouble in her district.
Rich Kim resents the charge stores like his attract loiters and argues calls to police are often met with a slow response.
Mike Choe runs a non-profit supporting Korean-owned businesses. He plans on raising $100,000 to fight the measure.
“I do think it’s a bad bill that will endanger Korean Americans,’ he said.
Bass says she’s battling for her constituents.
Kim argues as a Korean-American he’s being targeted.
“This bill targets Korean Americans,” Cole asked. Bass responded, “Absolutely not. I find that offensive.” [Fox 29]
The tensions between Korean-American business owners and African-American communities has been simmering since the 1992 LA Riots when Koreantown was a major target of the rioters. It has continued in recent years when riots in Baltimore and Missouri targeted Korean-American businesses. There was also the protests to shutdown a Korean-American gas station in Dallas:
Muhammad, 44, who was appointed to his post in 1994 by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, says Pak must go. So should other Asian-American merchants in black neighborhoods, he says.
Could you imagine the uproar if legislation was passed that targeted African-Americans to make them more easy victims of crime and to put them out of business? That is clearly what some of the social justice warriors are trying to do with violence, legislation, and protests to push the Korean-American business owners out of black communities. Yet racism directed towards Korean-Americans draws little national media attention.
It’s the same old song the blame game they the socialist democratics have destroyed many inner cities and it’s because of hard working people who
pay there taxes. These people should focus on education and responsibility and love of family and stop blaming the working and responsible people for all there self inflicted troubles. God Bless our hard working Korean American citizens.

Anyway, Philly as a part of PA has suffered under the lousiest Alcohol laws since prohibition. Seriously, until the last decade or so they haven’t really touched them since prohibition. Growing up if you wanted to buy booze you had to go to a distributor, need wine or hard stuff you could only go to the state owned & ran stores. They finally start relaxing the control and some fat ass councilman gets all in a fuss. Same thing happened when they started selling ROYO machines in Philly when people were fed up with the high cigarette taxes. You’ve never seen government move so fast to get legislation passed than when they moved to stop that; the Governor had a hard time signing in-between the burn marks on the paper.
I don’t know what her beef is with the BP Glass other than maybe the shame that the neighborhoods where it’s so prevalent in Philly are mainly comprised of people who look like her. The real nuisance are those neighborhoods, complete blights. When I was young you learned two things quick in Philly: Stay the F out of North Philly & most of West Philly, now the list is so extensive of where not to go you’re better off skipping the whole city.
Philly’s government is pretty shady, while this lady’s pushing to shut down SnG’s, there’s a bill to allow gambling in them because Philly’s been dying since the 70s to cut into AC’s profits.

This is hardly an anti-Korean thing, it’s a typical end-state of Democratic population centers. They drive away the middle class and attract trash wholesale.
And they wonder why the inner cities become a food desert. Idiot politician.

You don’t see the white tribal headman consulting the chicken bones before determining if disproportionate black crime is due to evil spirits or child witches so he can decide if it is better to råpe a baby or eat an albino.

If the black community, and leadership like her, would stop and reflect for a moment on why these safety barriers are necessary… and then work on those problems, they would not only come down on their own, but a lot of other problems would vanish as well.
But it is easier to blame personal and cultural shortcomings on sneaky Asians and racist whites.
Unfortunately, there is a huge sense of entitlement in Philly’s gang-infested and drug-ridden neighborhoods that justifies profitting from holding up, robbing and killing Korean convenience store owners whenever they’re short of cash. It’s almost a joke to them. Need cash? “Go shoot Mr. Lee or his wife in the head and take the whole till!” they say.
Now, these selfsame hoodrats who’ve used Korean-owned convenience stores as their personal ATM machines are pissed off that they can’t rob these stores anymore and shoot the storeowners since the stores have invested a lot of money in loss prevention and physical security, especially with the bulletproof glass cages they now have been forced to use.
So what do these whiney-assed hoodrats do? They go complain to mommy that they can’t “make a living” anymore doing hits on unsuspecting Korean business owners. (“Mommy” in this case, just happens to be Councilwomen like Cindy Bass, who speak only for their predominately African-American constituency, except those same constituents are overwhelmingly hoodrats with gang and drug ties who prey on Korean store owners for a living.)
The problem with this nonsensical, special-interest legislation is that it is inherently unconstitutional (5th Amendment Rights: “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law…”).
If Philly’s inner-city hoodrats are pissed off that they can’t make a living doing hits on Korean businesses anymore, maybe they should sign up for foodstamps, or better yet, how ’bout you go git a job?
For once, I’m on the KA side. I wouldn’t want to work there without the flexiglass either.

I think the removal of the bullet proof glass is what is directly targeting Korean-Americans to make it so unsafe for them that it forces them out of the neighborhoods. If the local government wants to reduce cigarette and alcohol sales in these neighborhoods fine, but there is no reason to make working conditions even more unsafe for business owners trying to make a living in these neighborhoods other than to force them out.

The initial measures have passed to no one’s surprise. This joke legislation is moving onwards. If you’re not poor or an elite lib I’d say no better time than the present to move the F out of population centers like Philly.
