All because democrats put criminals before citizens.
Flyingsword, that’s how you grow your votes.
The USO has them at least.
Gonna be some pissed off NFL fans at work tomorrow morning!
Did this happen the last time there was a government shut-down?
(we were at a Reserve base then, so I don’t know how it impacted active duty bases…that was a nightmare, but they don’t have any support features to eliminate, just active duty orders to rescind all around)
LIz, I read a CNN article yesterday that said that AFN stayed on the air last time. It didn’t state why its different this time around.
But good news: After outcry, deployed troops will get to watch football during shutdown
“Sports broadcasting is not an essential activity and stopped to comply with the shutdown,” she said. “With minimal manning, we can keep the sports channel up without incurring any additional cost or manpower-complying with shutdown guidance.”

Thanks for the response, Andy.
Heh, at least they’ll get their football! That is good news.
The commissary is going to shut down here in the CONUS by wednesday if nothing changes. Hope they won’t do that overseas.
They restored AFN Sports and AFN News.
I don’t know how or why sports is essential but I remember every command post I went to since the 90’s was required to have a TV set to CNN since they often had near real time connections to reporters at the site of global crises.
JoeC, I think it’s more likely that Sports on AFN is not “essential” but rather Mattis knows what is best.
Who knew that’s all it took to authorize spending?
When military leaders complained they didn’t have all the money they needed for training and equipment due to sequestration, maybe their priorities were off. Could some lives have been spared, such as sailors in those collisions?
They restored AFN Sports for the same reason none of the major sports league websites are blocked but I can’t browse any game review sites on a DoD network. Because fuck sports.
Mind you, I’ve not been a fan of the NFL since “The Strike”; but I realize it’s quite popular.
Money not specifically directed by Congress gets spent the way the President decides. Or the “Deep State” if the President is distracted…
My non-gummint office does not block most sites; but does block Dilbert and seemingly all Korean newspapers. And also game-related sites…
Maybe there is more chance of being hacked at those sites? I haven’t btried The Onion or Duffleblog, so I don’t know if they just hate sarcasm…
Reasons for blocks are various, sometimes a site is blocked not for its content but simply because a plugin is being used that’s on some list of exploitables. Like let’s say GI switches `the Drop from its current blog template to some old one Ruskie McSpyface wrote back in 2005 that’s known to be weak for code injection, it’ll be blocked.
Ever since DoD started funneling all browsing through proxies though they’ve inconsistently applied content blocks. No you’re not allowed to read up on the next hot 3D Shooter coming out because you’re supposed to be doing work but we’ll turn a blind eye if you want to see how many yards Wifebeater Mc AnthemKneeler ran for in yesterday’s stupid football game. Same goes for checking your stocks despite it being well known you aren’t supposed to be doing that during work.
“Wifebeater Mc AnthemKneeler”… Love it!!
