Picture of the Day: 2nd Infantry Division Closes Headquarters on Camp Red Cloud

Closure of U.S. division command

Soldiers lower the U.S. flag during the closing ceremony for Freeman Hall, the headquarters of the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division, at Camp Red Cloud in Euijeongbu, north of Seoul, on Oct. 16, 2018, in this photo provided by the division three days later. The unit’s command has been relocated to Camp Humphreys, a sprawling complex about 70 kilometers south of Seoul. (Yonhap)

So when is the division going to change its song? It has been years since any of their units have been along the DMZ. Should go, ‘Today at camp Humphreys, we sit with no mission……’

I was recently in Uijongbu on a Saturday, and just for old time’s sake, I took a spin around CRC. It was mid-day … I think I saw a total of three soldiers. Time just continues to march on and brings changes with it. As best as I can tell (from Google Maps street view), of the six gov’t quarters I’ve lived in over the years, only one is still standing – but it was brand spanking new when I moved in back in the mid-90s.

Good lord – I still remember when the 2nd ID was still at Camp Casey.

@Martin – the bulk of the units have always been at the Camp Casey enclave – it’s just the headquarters and a couple of support units that was at CRC. I’m not sure why the headquarters was relocated from Casey to CRC, but that’s where the CFC headquarters was located back in the day, and there is still a nice big house for the commander that also has a tunnel that runs from the house to the bunker. The 2ID Commander also has (had) a house at Yongsan though, so I don’t know if the division commander’s family ever lived at that house at CRC.
