Centennial of 1919 popular movement against Japanese ruleStudents of Ewha Girls High School place flowers in front of a statue of independence fighter Yu Gwan-sun at the school in Seoul on March 1, 2019, during a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1919 popular movement that protested for independence from Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. Yu, an alumnus of the school, died while imprisoned for leading pro-independence rallies. Transferred to an underground cell in the prison, she marked the first anniversary of the March 1 Movement before dying of her injuries on Sept. 28, 1920, at age 17. (Yonhap)
