ROK Military Increasing Virtual Gaming Capabilities to Train Soldiers
|In my opinion virtual training is useful, but cannot replace actually firing real weapons and training in a real environment:
Technology plays an integral part in modern warfare, and its role is even more important for countries like South Korea, which faces constant threats from North Korea.

In line with changing battlefield dynamics, the South Korean military has been pushing for ways to train soldiers in simulated environments using the latest technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
The Korea Military Academy has joined hands with local companies to develop VR and AR training programs for its Army cadets, which will be available on its Seoul campus later this year.
Experts say one of the key advantages of VR is the ability to immerse users in a virtual, yet safe, world, reducing costs and risks associated with battlefield training.
“Training soldiers using VR and AR content can save on the considerable budget for large-scale training and reduce risks from dangerous environments,” Kim Tae-kyu, a game professor at Kwangwoon University in Seoul, said. “It will be more beneficial when combined with real battlefield experiences.”

Target identification and acquisition is a all well and good, but you need to be able to actually charge up stairs or hills with your weapon, ammo and ruck.
Meh, I’m a sailor, not a soldier. I’ll stay in my own damned lane, I guess.
VR training is nonsense.
While whe ROK soldiers are playing Fortnite and Minecraft, the Norks are suffering with worms in their bellies and fear for their families if they fail…
If one remembers the actual Korean War, there were a few tough ROK units; but most were not very steady even next to UN troops.
Of course, they didn’t have video games and K-pop back then…
pew pew..pew pew..
I thought about this today and about all the high tech work that went into it.
What a waste of time and $$$. Why not just develop a “hit” camera that registered a MILES code? Then the soldier could use his own weapon, blanks, and MILES gear.
No need to make a simulated gun with laser recoil mechanism etc.
Soldier would have to reload like real and better yet, pick up his spent brass afterwards! 😎
