There’s really no such thing as “International Law”. There’s just polite and impolite diplomacy.
One example? The US, with few exceptions (always prosecuted), followed the proceedings of the Hague and Geneva Conferences on the conduct of war. None of our opponents, since the beginning of the 20th Century, has bothered to do so. Even those countries that signed and agreed to do so.
As near as I can tell, although it’s supposed to protect our troops, our protection of enemy combatants who violate the “rules” only encourages everyone else to do do.
Makes me glad I’m not in charge. Giving 40′ pine enemas for war criminals and unlawful combatants would probably give someone nightmares and get stern memos and woke hashtags written in opposition, triggering some Muslim congresscritter to denounce my barbarism while ignoring the IEDs and beheadings and storing weapons in schoolhouses and using ambulances to transport troops and…
