Daejeon Holding Poll to Determine New English Slogan

Is it just me or once again these English language slogans are not very good?:

The listed names above are a shortlist of English slogans subject to an online poll to select one for the city of Daejeon.

What is your choice and why?

The poll will continue through Dec. 13 on the city’s opinion-collecting website. Each signed-up subscriber is entitled to cast a vote.

The event is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Daejeon winning “metropolitan city” status.

The shortlist of 20 slogans was selected out of 2,900 through a multi-step review by experts and civilian panels.

Does anyone have any favorites or new suggestions for a Daejeon slogan?

Daejeon must not have hired many native English speakers to assist with this task.

I can’t see what they want to say… but that might be because I speak English…

Maybe they want “Daejeon means Opportunity!”

But that’s not what they’re saying with any of the 20 THC- or Meth-inspired suggestions listed.

Eat more kimchi and try again.

Daejeon literally means “large field”…

Setnaffa, there’s no need to be so hateful by saying people need to eat more kimchi

Nonazis, did you know “there are many types of kimchi”? 😀 And “it is very good for health”? 😀

Not all of it is the “death-by-red-pepper” variety. Not all of it stinks (but none of it it should be left out on the counter in the sun). There are many Americans who don’t like Italian food that has garlic or mushrooms, like my neighbor–or seafood for that matter, like my brother–so don’t feel bad. 😆

If you don’t have a local source of your favorite kimchi, I really do feel pity for you. 🙁

Daejeon: Large Field

That’s… uh… not that catchy.

They could develop it into the hub of Asian male prostitution…

…as Daejeon Gay John is pretty dope.

…though so is Daegu Gay Goo…

…so they will have to fight that out amongst themselves.

Daejeon: We Ate More Kimchee…

…might satisfy the anti-Nazi faction.

In 1950, Daejong was the site of General Dean’s capture and the Chaplain Medic Massacre. They could certainly make a festival about North Koreans killing doctors, priests, and the occasional wounded “migun”…

Or maybe hire an advertising agency that specializes in the target demographic they are seeking…

Daejeon: Throw Another Silkworm Pupae on the Barbi

I love how some of them are actually insults in English, provided you punctuate correctly. Many of them are not far off of insults. I’m torn between thinking that’s just from an unfortunate translation or showing some self-awareness on the city government’s part.
