US and ROK Cost Sharing Talks Remained Deadlocked

Here is the latest on the US-ROK cost sharing negotiations:

Korea and the United States still have gaps over the sharing of the cost for stationing the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said Friday, after they wrapped up three days of hard bargaining in Los Angeles.

The failure to reconcile their differences added to concerns that Korean workers in the USFK could be forced to go on unpaid leave starting next month, as the U.S. military has repeatedly warned of furloughs if a deal is not reached.

Seoul’s top negotiator Jeong Eun-bo and his U.S. counterpart, James DeHart, held the talks from Tuesday through Thursday to reach the cost-sharing deal, called the Special Measures Agreement (SMA). They were initially to meet for two days but extended their negotiations for another day.

Korea needs to pay 100% for their own defense.

You don’t seem to realize that the US troops are not in Korea solely for the defense of Korea.

Flyingsword, you know very well that USFK is in Korea for the inexpensive tailors and the awesome deals on luggage…

and back in the day I would say it was for the brass items but Korea doesn’t have the brass products they use to. Probably because less brass in ammo casings….heck the 120mm went caseless and 30mm uses aluminum casings.

Hypothetically, what would happen if the ROK decided that they wouldn’t pay anything at all. Would the US military actually leave?

Flyingsword, I thought Korea had to pay 500%? When did that price come down to 100%?

Flyingsword, those ugly black 4-zipper “expandable immigration bags” lasted my family back and forth every year or two for about 15 years. Best way to deliver instant coffee to Brothers-in-law, anchovies and red pepper on the way back…

However, yes, I was being snarky…
