Japanese Government Says It is Not Declaring a State of Emergency Over Coronavirus

I find it pretty amazing how different the coronavirus infection and death rates are between Tokyo and New York City. Why is New York City being devastated by the coronavirus while similarly densely populated Tokyo is not experiencing the same problems? That is the real story the media should be looking at:

People check out cherry blossoms, which have been blocked off because of the coronavirus pandemic, at Ueno Park in Tokyo, Monday, March 30, 2020.

As of Tuesday, Japan had 1,953 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 56 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Tokyo has counted 499 cases and 15 deaths as of Tuesday, according the Tokyo Metropolitan Government website.

A national law passed earlier this month allows the prime minister to declare a state of emergency when rapid spread of the virus poses a serious threat to people’s lives and the economy.

The decision to declare a state of emergency will carefully be made based on advice by a wide range of experts, Suga said.

An intelligent, homogenous society concerned with the wellbeing of fellow citizens vs a stew of hostile low-IQ third-worlders who don’t care about anyone other than themselves?

Don, you may have used a little hyperbole; but you’re pretty close to the bullseye.

You guys blame ‘third world low iq people’ for the faster spread compared to Asia, but I really think the blame lies with Western people’s refusal to wear a mask and wearing shoes inside the homes, as well as their public disobedience to socially distance themselves from one another.

Yup. Those high IQ people super spreaders who went on KTX, to a wedding and still refused to get tested. Sparkling Korea.

Japan is infamous for their social hermits (some won’t leave their room for months), and isolation is apparently serious problem among their youth. Most young people are single and even married people sleep on separate beds.

They’re also supposed to be meticulous about washing their hands. Every country has different cultural quirks and the covid-19 isn’t an equal opportunity offender, and it looks like Japan’s way of life was conducive to mititgating the spread, at least for now.

FTR Masks are not available to the public in the US…some people are wearing masks that they apparently had on hand for paintin and weed spraying, etc. The govt has been saying they are not recommended, trying to preserve the supply for medical people. There is no a refusal to wear masks though they have been associated with being sick rather than preventing sickness. We also see some gloves, but they also disappeared right after the outbreak started.
The shoe thing had already been changing to some degree in the US.

Anyone who thinks a paper mask over the nose and mouth blocks aerosol particles entering the eyes is silly. Anyone who thinks gloves worn at the store eliminate viruses from cans or other packages, bags, and clothing, is likewise not being logical. And shoes worn inside or not is another red herring.

In the first three months of this year, here is a list of worldwide deaths:

Coronavirus, 21,000 deaths.

Seasonal flu, 113,000.
Malaria, 228,000.
Suicide, 249,000.
Traffic fatalities, 314,000 deaths.
HIV/AIDS, 391,000 deaths.
Alcohol related deaths, 581,000.
Smoking-related deaths, 1,162,000.
Cancer deaths, 1,909,000 deaths.
Deaths attributed to starvation, 2,382,000 deaths.
And death by abortion, 9,900,000.

Remember that the world’s population is roughly 7,800,000,000.

It is amazing how so much has changed over the past 5 weeks… and how much more information we have.

Masks:

Surgical masks will not protect you. Cloth masks will not protect you. The best N95 masks will not protect you unless you know how to use them correctly and you handle them properly.

Then there is the issue of eye (and ear) protection.

However, all these masks will keep your coughing, sneezing, and talking snot and spittle droplets inside your mask where they belong and not on my freshly disinfected surfaces.

So they serve an important purpose keeping everyone safe if everyone wears them.

Be aware the outside of the mask is the most potentially viral contaminated place around you. Be aware wadding it up and putting it in a damp pocket can colonize bacteria.

“But there are no masks!”

Bullcorn.

You can hand stitch an excellent mask with material from around the house.

Bonus: I set up a friend and his wife on hard times with a bespoke mask making business. Custom masks. To start, they ran off a bunch of really nice professional-looking three layer cloth masks. They put them on Facebook (5 bucks, I think) and got shut down immediately…

…because Facebook reasons. Marketing is the hard part when everyone is in on the “no masks” narrative… and that’s the way they want to keep it.

Again: Anybody can make a mask. Those who complain about no mask are lazy, stupid, unaware, or full of poo.

My Private Reserve:

3M 6200 mask (I also have an unused 6800)
3M 603 filter adapters
3M 5N11 filters (5P71 works too)
3M 501 filter covers

Also, eye protection that I mix up (awesome swim goggles, sealed lab goggles, two different motorcycle goggles)… gotta mix up the fashion.

My thinking is this:

Unlike masks, the filter are somewhat recessed and you never have to touch their virusy surface. While I have a few hundred filters, you can use them… indefinitely? The more they clog up with filtered particulates, the better filters they become… just harder to breathe. People using them in somewhat dirty environments talk about days, weeks, or a month between filter changes… at a dollar each. Further, due to check valves, the air inside is fresh and dry rather than humid garlic and kimchee. Wearing it shows you mean business. And you can invite young Skywalker to come to the dark side.

Good luck on your decisions.

It looks like Whitehouse, American CDC, and even WHO, are now recommending people to wear masks to prevent infected people from unknowingly infecting others around them.
