ROK Agrees to 13.9% Increase in New USFK Cost Sharing Deal

This is essentially the deal the ROK always wanted to sign with the US, but the Trump administration would not agree to:

South Korea will increase the amount if pays to support U.S. troops on the peninsula by 13.9%, the country’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday following agreement on a six-year cost-sharing deal.

South Korea will pay $1.03 billion this year, up from $910 million in 2019, to support 28,500 U.S. service members there, according to a ministry statement.

You can read more at the link, but I always said this would be an easy win for the Biden administration especially when it is a deal the ROK always wanted.

GI, we might define “win” differently. If the cost to the US taxpayer to defend South Korea is > $0, it’s not necessarily a win…

You’re welcomed to pack up and leave. This 13% increase is simply outrageous, right after an 8% increase a year before. North Korea’s threats are nuclear weapons, not their conventional weapons. South Korea doesn’t need expensive US troops stationed in Korea. The US offer of nuclear shield for South Korea is fake. South Korea would be much better off spending money on nuclear weapons to keep the North Koreans in check, as well as continuing to build up its arms to counter encroaching threats from China and Japan at the same time.

Threat from Japan? That’s an odd view of reality you have there.

johnhenry, it’s a country ruled by the far right with delusional viewpoints that are more suitable in 1940’s Japan. Militarily they are incompetent, but their foolish delusional viewpoints could lead to costly miscalculations in the future. It was only last month when South Korean coast guard ship was facing off the Japanese coast guard ship, over the EEZ overlap. That could have easily lead to a border skirmish.
