Defector Says Columbia University is Crazier than North Korea

Yeonmi Park has an interesting take on her time at Columbia University:

Yeonmi Park

One of several hundred North Korean defectors settled in the United States, Park, 27, transferred to Columbia University from a South Korean university in 2016 and was deeply disturbed by what she found.

“I expected that I was paying this fortune, all this time and energy, to learn how to think. But they are forcing you to think the way they want you to think,” Park said in an interview with Fox News. “I realized, wow, this is insane. I thought America was different but I saw so many similarities to what I saw in North Korea that I started worrying.”

Those similarities include anti-Western sentiment, collective guilt and suffocating political correctness.

Yeonmi saw red flags immediately upon arriving at the school.

During orientation, she was scolded by a university staff member for admitting she enjoyed classic literature such as Jane Austen.

“I said ‘I love those books.’ I thought it was a good thing,” recalled Park.

“Then she said, ‘Did you know those writers had a colonial mindset? They were racists and bigots and are subconsciously brainwashing you.’”

It only got worse from there as Yeonmi realized that every one of her classes at the Ivy League school was infected with what she saw as anti-American propaganda, reminiscent to the sort she had grown up with. (…….)

“Even North Korea is not this nuts,” she admitted. “North Korea was pretty crazy, but not this crazy.”

Fox News via a reader tip

Here is how she wraps up the article:

“North Koreans, we don’t have Internet, we don’t have access to any of these great thinkers, we don’t know anything. But here, while having everything, people choose to be brainwashed. And they deny it.”

Having come to America with high hopes and expectations, Yeonmi expressed her disappointment.

“You guys have lost common sense to degree that I as a North Korean cannot even comprehend,” she said.

“Where are we going from here?” she wondered. “There’s no rule of law, no morality, nothing is good or bad anymore, it’s complete chaos.”

“I guess that’s what they want, to destroy every single thing and rebuild into a Communist paradise.”

A pretty interesting perspective on the direction of America from Yeonmi Park.

Leftist Americans keep ignoring testimony from defectors like Park and other escapees from totalitarian regimes.

I dunno if she was taking classes for a 4-year degree she could have also tried:

1. Transfer to a different school if it was that bad (if she got into Columbia, I’m sure she had plenty of other options).
2. Stayed there and pushed back, given her unique perspective.

At the surface level from the article/interview I’m not getting too much of my second option. I’m just getting a whole bunch of “wah wah my University has liberal professors/staff members” The whole “I’m from North Korea, I defected” is notable, but how about giving your take and refuting what you disagree with. They are saying writers from Victorian England had a mindset of Colonialism. So what say you? They are saying things coming off as anti-American, what say you?

I’m tired of this whole outrage style journalism that does a great job presenting an issue, but poor job of going beyond that. All I get is liberal universities = bad. Ok, so why not go after what they are saying…?

American universities are run by Antifa/BLM these days. Not safe for political dissidents.

I follow Yeonmi on YouTube. She is an articulate young woman who is fighting on several fronts for human rights and to expose the inner secrets of North Korea. As for “Cold Noodles” comments, I say this, this is one woman who is speaking out to let people know what is happening. Your suggestions are 1) turn tail and run hoping to find another institution that is not infected with the liberal pathogen or 2) take the chance of losing her voice on social media through direct criticism of one of the bastions of socialism in our education system? ABSURD!

Yeonmi picks her battles and knows when she’s over her head and cannot make a difference on her own. America is turning into a socialist cesspool where your voice is silenced by corporate social media and you are attacked by the MSM for having less than liberal viewpoints. There’s no room left in America for debate and discourse. If you don’t agree with the radical leftist Marxists, you are immediately flushed down the tubes never to be heard from again.

” If you don’t agree with the radical leftist Marxists, you are immediately flushed down the tubes never to be heard from again.”

“If you don’t agree with the “radical right wing Trump supporters”, you are immediately flushed down the tubes never to be heard from again.

Same shit, different day. BLUF – America is broken.

This sounds completely like right wing propagandist make believe nonsense AGAIN. I don’t believe a single word of it until I see solid mulitple sourced evidence. Right wingers in the US are renowned for flat out lying. This sounds like yet another instance. She really is the Korean Candace Owens.

Nigel, you ask a good question.

But before I embark on this project, how many people who actually lived under authoritarian communism complaining about Columbia University will it take to convince you that maybe there is something going on?
