Tankie is a pejorative label originally used by dissident or sectarian Marxist-Leninists to designate members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Specifically it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out defending Soviet use of tanks to crush the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and later the 1968 Prague Spring uprising; or more broadly, those who adhered to pro-Soviet positions in general. More recently it has been used to accuse people of following authoritarian Marxism–Leninism, especially those who endorse, defend, or deny the crimes of communist leaders who have committed genocide and crimes against humanity, such as Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Kim Il-sung.
