PPP Files Libel Lawsuit Against MBC Over Allegations of Falsifying President Yoon’s Hot Mic Comments

The back and forth over President Yoon’s hot mic comments during his U.S. trip has become nothing more than partisan bickering at this point. With that said considering MBC’s past track record, it is very believable someone there would be willing to falsify President Yoon’s comments:

Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung speaks at the National Assembly on Wednesday, where he said his party would seek to hold accountable those in the government responsible for a recent string of alleged diplomatic gaffes as well as a revision to the current limit on presidential terms. [YONHAP]

The People Power Party (PPP) said Tuesday it will create a task force to investigate what it called “selective and biased” subtitling of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s hot mic moment in New York last week.

The PPP’s announcement came the same day that the Democratic Party (DP) made clear it would push ahead with plans to punish those in the government it deems at fault for what it has characterized as a gaffe-ridden presidential tour of Britain, the United States and Canada.

The dueling plans by the rival parties represent an escalation in the political spat over comments made by Yoon at a fundraiser in New York hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden. (…..)

The comments could be heard in a video recording first released last week by MBC, or Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. Some of Yoon’s remarks in the clip were drowned out by loud music and background noise.

Based on the broadcaster’s subtitles, Yoon was speaking about Biden losing face if he didn’t get congressional approval for something. Initial reports said he was referring to Biden’s pledge to contribute another $6 billion to the Global Fund, which would require U.S. Congress approval.

The PPP, led by floor leader Joo Ho-young, alleges that MBC distorted the president’s remarks.

“MBC basically incorporated tabloid speculation as subtitles for the president’s words,” Joo said at a gathering of all the party’s lawmakers at the National Assembly on Tuesday. “We believe that MBC violated basic journalistic ethics, including fact-checking, in its report,” he added.

Earlier, the presidential office denied that Yoon was referring to members of the U.S. Congress when he used the expletive, saying that he was actually talking about members of Korea’s National Assembly.

The PPP has already filed a libel lawsuit against MBC President and CEO Park Sung-jae, reporters and other relevant individuals for alleged disclosure of false information.

They argued that the report harmed Korea’s “national interests” and demanded an apology from MBC and its CEO’s resignation.

President Yoon is getting the full Trump treatment from the Korean media…

Korean media, government, companies, and people used to be 100% pro Korean.

They would fight amongst themselves over which hometown the funds got allocated to… but Korea always came first.

Now, they are seduced by the false promises of being a world player in globalism.

This might be true for Samsung and Hyundai, multinationals which are now only marginally Korean.

It isn’t true for Little Kim on the Street which globalism sees as a disposable tool in a disposable country that is becoming more socially, politically, and economically self destructive than Korea First.

Korea had better wise up and become Korea First cohesive again… absolutely nobody else is.

So now this party be careful now, acting like a despot dictatorship, threatening to throw people in jail for ‘defamation’ just for criticizing the government. Like how Park Gun Hye did during the last years of her rule used to do. This Yoon fellow has thrown more people in jail with trumped-up charges against those who dare to talk bad about his government, than any other Korean president.

Korea Man, throwing someone in jail for criticism and suing someone for using their platform to spread known lies with the intention of damaging the country are two different things.

It isn’t clear if the news lied. But if they did, they need financial punishment and those who lied need to be held criminally responsible.

You can spread lies and you can damage your country but you cannot do both.

Chickenhead, Yoon is laying criminal charges against just about everyone, left, right, and center. What financial penalty? We’re talking about criminal prosecutions against those who criticize Yoon’s party. I’m sure Yoon was paid off by the rightwing American establishment. They love him because he works for American interests. After he’s out of power, he needs to be investigated and have his ass thrown in jail as well as all his underlings.

You may be right.

I am not well informed on this.

However, I am pretty firm in my opinion that if the media lies, it should be actionable. Offenders should be punished, corporations should be fined, and victims should be compensated.

The topic is Yoon vs the media.

I don’t know if his remarks were misrepresented, or if it was done through unprofessional reporting or malice.

If the facts are as rhe news reports, I will lean towards your opinion.

If the media lied to damage him and Korea, throw them from helicopters.

GI Korea, deliberately spreading false hate information online is different from legitimately criticizing a weak incompetent extremely corrupt government. Dozens have been charged and face jail time for criticizing the government. Even the foreign press have commentaries equating Yoon as an unpresidential amature, who is more interested in prosecuting and putting people in jail, rather than being a real President. I know I know, you like Yoon because he’s your puppet government advancing US interests at the expense of South Koreans.

Korean man is complaining about Yoon putting journalists in jail which hasn’t even happened while was silent when former President Moon’s administration actively allowed multiple conservative journalists to be put in jail for libel even when reporting facts.

I believe the only experience GIKorea has with Korea is his tour of duty in the USFK.

Other than that he doesn’t speak or read Korean, doesn’t live here and most probably do not understand the culture, the laws and pretty much how things work here.

Which combined with his right-wing beliefs makes him guillible to rabble rousers like the person whom he once called his “favorite Korea analyst”.

With that being said.

Anyone here can sue someone else for libel if they feel they have been libeled and afford the attorney’s fees, just like in the US.

The only difference is that in the US if the judge sides with the person suing than the person being sued has to only pay damages or settle out of court, while in Korea the person being sued can be fined or sent to jail.

So in the case of former President Moon, he sued or at least his aides sued for him, the judges ruled that the person(s) being sued did libel and sent them off to jail as per the law.

Specifically in some of the cases, the supposed “jounalists” being sued were Youtubers not “jounalists” from major media outlets and we all know Youtubers aren’t known exactly know for dealing in facts.

As for the cartoon that GIKorea is holding up as a case of former Pres. Moon suppressing the media, it has nothing to do with Pres. Moon and seems more like an ordinary civil suit case that has been overlypackaged and blown out of proportion by GIKorea and his “favorite Korea analyst.”

The PPP is doing the same thing in suing, however unlike the previous cases under former Pres. Moon, where GIKorea is claiming that what was reported are “facts” and lamenting about taking away the freedom of the press, it seems that GIKorea without duly checking is blindly siding with the PPP and staying silent on what may be an open attempt by the PPP and the Presidential Office to silence the media, for reporting something unfavorable about the current President.

And for those who want to check for themselves and speak and understand Korean, check the video(s) in question, which are in Youtube and other sites for all to see.

GIKorea isn’t interested in facts.

He only wishes to see Yoon remain in power no matter what the cost.

And considering current events, it is not surprising that GIKorea fears the Yoon presidency going the way of the Park presidency hence the revving up of the support machine.
