Itaewon Businesses Suffer as Less People Come to Itaewon After Crushing Tragedy
|When I was in Itaewon recently the place did seem far less vibrant than before the accident:
An alley in Itaewon in Yongsan District, central Seoul, near where the deadly crowd crush occurred is empty on the night of Jan. 14. [CHO JUNG-WOO]
The once bustling alleys of Itaewon in central Seoul were deserted on a recent Saturday night. Staffers of pubs and restaurants stood out in the cold encouraging the occasional passerby to come in.

It’s been almost three months since the crowd crush on Oct. 29 took the lives of 158 people, and that of a teen survivor who committed suicide shortly after.
People clearly don’t feel comfortable going back to the area to party, and the pain is only deepening for business owners in Itaewon.
You can read more at the link.
This is a rather disingenuous article. People don’t come out in the cold on Saturday nights as frequently as warmer holidays just after lockdowns are relaxed.
Again with the apples and oranges.
And besides, the new Halal District is not as much fun as it was in the 90s. The lack of GI cash seems to have altered the balance.
Here are some interesting dynamics in the entertainment industry.
– people have many options to socialize other than a bar via social media
– tendr (and grindr) offer much more efficient hookups than going out on the town (bonus lesson: feminism, which has sold the lie that being equal to a man requires being the same as a man, has created some real skanks… and they are proud of it)
– people are in the habit of drinking at home after covid lockdowns
– and the biggest reason… the law changed in Korea about taxi driver schedules so drivers dont have limited days to work… which encouraged then to work nights… so even with call taxis, it is a little hard to get downtown and even harder to get away at 2am.
Grammar Nazi Moment:
Picking on grammar is kinda stupid… especially when I make up my own grammar all the time.
However, this little grammar lesson will help many people here, as this is a common mistake… so consider it a frienly knowledge transfer without some lower motivation.
Less is used with uncountable nouns. Fewer is used with countable nouns.
Example:
Men are less fun becasue they have fewer holes.
You could probably make some snoozer sentence with fewer cups and less coffee, as well.
It was dying due to the migration to Humphreys followed by COVID. Unfortunately, the shops tried to boost business and then this happened. Itaewon can’t win for losing.
