My tax dollars being wasted in Pohang….on top of Ukraine.

Flyingsword, I think having our guys be visible for a day leading by example to keep Korea beautiful is not a waste of tax dollars.
It can even be argued that making Europeans dependent on American gas, tricking NATO into getting rid of their soviet equipment so they have to buy American weapons and the subscription services that go with them, destroying EU industry so factories are moved to America, and setting up Blackrock to buy prime Ukrainian real estate as wartime prices… well… is that not worth a few tax dollars?
Besides, if we do nothing, someone might notice the dollar printing presses are going brrrrr… and the interest on our debt is starting to get in the way of good roads and affordable medical care.
This conflict has to escalate no matter what it costs tl fuel the fire.
Plus world wars are always fought in Europe… so not our problem.
God knows Korean beaches could use a good cleanup. The beaches themselves are beautiful, but trash is almost everywhere. I saw that while hiking along the east coast in 2021, and again while walking the perimeter of Jeju Island last year. This is one reason why I prefer walking the inland bike routes: they’re way cleaner.
To be fair, the US needs to clean up its own litter-by-the-water problem as well. I saw that all the time in my hometown of Alexandria, VA. Lived close to the GW Parkway, which parallels the Potomac River, and there was plenty of trash at the river’s edge just along the 8-mile stretch from Mount Vernon to Old Town.
Larger arguments about climate change, etc., are beyond my pay grade, and I’m not much of a greenie overall, but picking up trash seems like an obviously good first step so that we’re not living in a toilet. The “pack it in, pack it out” rule of national parks strikes me as a good maxim to follow.

Kevin, your point is correct.
Trash, microplastics, overfishing, etc… these are the true emergencies.
Also, litter in the USA has a very good correlation with a high number of third world non-Americans.
They are used to littering and they have no investment in America.
The places from California to New Mexico where reconquista is in full swing and Mexican flags are proudly displayed look like… well… Mexico.

US tax dollars wasted..pfff…. for what is clearly a single day to do some local PR to make something look better than it really is.
Wake up from your fantasy world.

Chickenhead you are correct. This is the real face of US relations with Korea. Instead of competing fairly, the US wants to forcibly appropriate the industries that they want for themselves.
Some Yahoo will say American chip companies also have to abide by this rule. But they’ll dodge the fact that it’s the American government that wants to boost American chip companies at the expense of Korean and Taiwanese companies. There’s zero chance of the American government giving trade secrets of American companies to Korean and Taiwanese companies, but the chances of happening the other way, are pretty high and inevitable.

Flyingsword, you missed a good chance:
“The only thing I want my marines cleaning up off beaches are commies.”
Or
“I want my marines taining on how to storm beaches, not clean them.”
I will give you credit for both, though.
Your heart was in the right place.

Storming beaches in this day in age is a silly and outdated notion.

“Storming beaches” for fun and profit…
Isn’t that what Spring Break means to millions of high school and college kids?
Just don’t bring glass or litter. Including leaving friends incapacitated by cheap booze. Never leave a comrafe behind.
