Beijing lured foreign companies in with subsidies and access to the Chinese market, and took the tech in return
That’s exactly what the US is doing against South Korean chip and battery makers. Lavish them with subsidies that look good at first, but then the terms are changed after the Koreans start building factories in the US. Terms like you must forfeit all the profits to the US government, you must provide social welfare to US workers, and you must allow the US government to access technology and business plans. Plus you cannot do business in China or else face consequences (wink wink you know what I mean). In that regard, the US is worse than China.

I’ll tell you why China won’t be the one dominating the electric car battery industry. They may dominate in China, but in the end, it will be South Korea that will dominate the rest of the world outside of China proper.
Chinese battery makers are strong in LFP batteries, but LFP batteries cannot be recycled, like the higher energy density NCM batteries that Koreans produce. Just wait til ten years or so when all those spent LFP batteries have no place to go other than landfills. The Chinese technology stolen from Korean and Japanese battery makers is designed to maximize short-term gains by quickly taking market share, quality is taking the back seat. China has tried and failed to make NCM batteries. Because there is still a very large technology gap between South Korean and Chinese battery makers.
In the link it says:
