Oppenheimer Delays Opening in Japan Due to Public Backlash to Marketing of the Movie
|Definitely not the best marketing strategy for the Oppenheimer movie in Japan:
Sachiko Ishikawa, a YouTube video blogger from Tokyo, talks about the “Barbenheimer” controversy in Japan against a backdrop of the fan poster on Aug. 9, 2023. (Sachiko Ishikawa/YouTube)
When “Barbie,” the live-action movie about a plastic doll, opened Friday in Japan, it did so without “Oppenheimer,” the rival film with which it shared a bill in the United States.
“Oppenheimer,” a biopic about the father of the atomic bomb, has no opening date in Japan, thus far, and Universal Studios has said nothing about the film coming to the only country targeted in anger with atomic weapons.
“Barbie” arrived divorced from its trendy “Barbenheimer” partner, a phenomenon in July in the United States but a cultural faux pas in Japan. (…………..)
Warner Bros.’ official “Barbie” account on X, formerly known as Twitter, re-tweeted a fan-art poster showing Murphy’s Oppenheimer carrying Robbie as Barbie superimposed over a mushroom cloud.
“It’s going to be a summer to remember,” declared the tweet, since deleted.

Everything out of Hollywood lately would be falsely praised if we called it “schlock” or “dreck”.
Oppenheimer was a communist and Barbie is just a venue for yet another ugly woman to blame men for her rancid personality.
Barbie should be popular in China though, as it includes a variant of the nine-dash line fable.

…the only country targeted in anger with atomic weapons…
Very inaccurate phrasing as anyone who lived through the Cold War can attest.
The so-called “superpowers” targeted each other in anger.
Japan was merely the only belligerent who saw them used during a hot war.
The testing of those weapons also “targeted” civilians in many countries as the science was not up to the task.
@setnaffa, Barbie is a pretty fun exercise in cognitive dissonance.

Kinda surprised they are trying to release Oppenheimer in Japan. Imagine if Japan made a movie about Unit 731 for release in China. I don’t think that would garner much appreciation. Some things are best left for domestic consumption.
Agreed. Especially when the US is pushing historical modifications. Japan was only forced to go to war, due to aggressive US actions against Japan including economic sanctions. The mass murder of Japanese citizens by the US nuclear bombs is also glorified which is a very provocotive acts against Japan.
One possibility is:
– China is a paper tiger on the verge of central governmental collapse. Their national financial problems are larger than America’s and, despite the constant propaganda that America is on the brink of a social civil war, the Chinese people are only a few meals (and debt payments) away from 100s of millions in the streets.
– The future enemy of the west, intentionally created, is the growing regional power of Japan. It is time to lay the groundwork for that.
Russia has never been a threat, China will cease to be one.
Japan will be the primary threat that keeps the military-industrial complex producing the next generation of fighters… and space-based warfare.
When you look back and wonder how America’s relationship with Japan soured, remember this… and a lot of other coming microagressions¹.
¹that is the first time to use that word with a straight face.
