South Korean Government Ends Regulations Against Plastic Straws and Disposable Cups

Via a reader tip comes news that South Korea will no longer ban plastic straws or single use cups due to the burden it is putting on small business owners:

“It is not the government’s duty to impose another burden on small business owners and self-employed people when they are already suffering from difficult economic conditions,” Lim told reporters during the briefing.

The Environment Ministry also pointed out that paper straws, an alternative to plastic straws, are 2 1/2 times more expensive but have lower consumer satisfaction.

“The use of plastic straws and stirring bars will be banned when the quality of replacement products is improved and the prices stabilize,” said Lee, without clarifying a specific time frame.

Although the ministry claims it has considered various situations, including the economic burden on consumers, criticism of the massive retreat on eco-friendly policies seems inevitable.

You can read more at the link, but I will never understand why activists are against paper cups. Paper is a renewable resource that is biodegradable.

Hooray! A major victory for the physically challenged.

Not to mention the businesses and their suppliers.

And customers who want sanitation and convenience.

Tis good to get rid of this commie conspiracy. The world needs more black liquid oil to burn.

“Tis” not a commie conspiracy.

Paper straws are just a personal, corporate, and governmental virtue signal.

Papers straws are intentionally terrible so everyone can pretend they are sacrificing to save the environment while they drive their SUV to buy a non-locally sourced drink filled with unholy chemicals that shouldn’t exist.

If your lifestyle requires the use of a straw, you are not saving the environment.

Chinabots just want something they can never get.

It’s the same reason Muslim men will blow themselves up.

When you are an incel and a born loser, the only thing you can do is try to destroy.

It take hard mental and physical work to create and produce.

Even animals can poop on everything.

They can’t win this one.

If they speak my mind, they do my work for me. If they don’t, it is clear they are not me.

Eventually, as they all do, interest will be lost and they will go somewhere the disruption gets the attention they are looking for.

I recommend somewhere they will squeal at “Muslims are right about women” or “I support late-term abortion so I support Israel killing babies in Gaza” or “stop over half of violent crime through inner city genocide” or “white people brought us modern civilization so maybe we can learn something from them”.

The Setnaffarians seemed to have forgotten that because of Yoon’s latest policy, a lot of small businesses that supplied paper straws will go broke.

This exposes the fact that the Setnaffarians don’t give a shit about Korean small businesses and are more interested in pushing their own selfish agenda.

This also shows that the main reason that the Setnaffarians state for their support of Yoon is all BS.

No doubt that they long for the right wing dictatorship to return to Korea.

It wouldn’t be surprising if they are indeed Russiabots interested in weakening Korea for their Russian masters, which would also benefit the Chinese.

You got me there, chinabot.

It is hard to walk down a Korean street without seeing a paper straw factory.

And of course it is almost impossible to get a drink… hardly any coffee shops.

Harping on about the handful of factories that might get hurt instead of the large number of retail shops that are hurt is not doing you any favors.

In the end, when you base your income off of the whims of how the government picks winners and losers, sometimes you turn out to be the loser.

Voice in head: Should we tell him South Korea has been the world’s 3rd largest importer of paper straws, sourcing from Indonesia, Vietnam, and India.

Other voice in head: Not yet. Not yet. Let’s ask him for some sort of proof all these small business domestic paper straw factories actually exist.

Voice not in head: Get off your goddâm phone and get back to work you slacker. Those soles aren’t going to glue themselves on those sneakers

The third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-3), is scheduled to take place from 13 to 19 November 2023 at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
