President Yoon Likely to Face Impeachment and Possibly Treason Charges

The Democratic Party would need to get 8 votes from President Yoon’s People Power Party to impeach him. It will be interesting to see what the PPP does because its leadership has clashed with Yoon as well. If the PPP decides to support impeachment they are essentially handing the Presidency to Lee Jae-myung and the Korean left. However if the PPP does decide to support impeachment I can’t really blame them because the martial law attempt was preposterous:

President Yoon Suk Yeol has come under growing attacks from the main opposition party to face impeachment or charges of treason, in the wake of his short-lived attempt to impose martial law that was blocked by the National Assembly. (Yonhap)

You can read more at the link, but any treason charges is going to depend on if the Constitutional Court finds that what Yoon did was Constitutional or not.

As someone from reddit who was there to block the military points out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/korea/comments/1h6gft9/i_blocked_707th_unit_soldiers_from_storming_the/

Yoon’s coup had no way of succeeding, only a dummy like him thought it would have any chance of success. It failed because the Korean military refused to take orders to take over the National Assembly. No President since 1980, ever dared to call in the military to squash the opposition party. But Yoon, a fossil from the 1970s, never thought that the military would disobey him.

What Yoon and his old right-wing cohorts failed to realize is that the Korean military will never point their guns again to the Korean people, because they are drafted young people in their 20’s who are highly educated. There’s no way they would kill their fellow Koreans, just because a lunatic President told them to do so. They know the history of bloody 1980, and they know who they side with.

Yoon is toast. If he doesn’t resign, impeachment will follow. If the PPP party does not support the impeachment, there will be massive street protests until they do. The history is about to repeat. Whether he’s impeached or resign, he will face the wrath of the public, and he will be charged with unconstitutional use of the Martial Law to suppress the political opposition. That’s called a treason. You all kept laughing at me whenever I said Yoon was a traitor to Korea, well here it is, it’s now a reality.

It’s hard to read Han Dong-hoon’s plans. He seems to be positioning himself as based in the PPP but appealing to Democrats who are embarrassed by Lee Jae-myung. Yet the Yoon supporters in the PPP seem to despise Han. Could he get enough Democrat votes to make up for that? Or will he start yet another 3rd party? Whatever he does, I think Han will be the most interesting to watch now.

Han Dong-hoon has come out against impeachment. Turns out, the Korea right remembered what happened when they stabbed Park in the back. If they don’t blink in the face of the coming unrest, they’ll find they need a security solution. The irony being, martial law starts looking real appealing. The problem being, martial law is now in reaction rather than with initiative. Much harder to take and hold control. What a clown show.

What Han Dong-hoon and the rest of the conservative party should’ve realized is that, like it or not, when part of the line breaks into a sudden and unexpected charge against your opponent, you often only have the choice of making a mad dash to follow that charge. The alternative is that charge getting mauled and those who stayed behind being defeated in detail.

If they want to politically survive, their best bet is to escalate the situation as much as possible. By all means let the left come out and riot. Yoon is not popular, but neither is the Korean left. The political focus will shift from Yoon to the destruction.

The entire PPP right wing party has voted not to impeach their President. They sure care about their country, right? Right?
I know you don’t care as long as you keep South Korea to be used for American interests, but South Koreans do care about what’s happening to their country, and how they President and the PPP has damaged the country beyond recognition. If the Right really cared about Koreans, they would look at South Korea’s damaged international reputation. And by protecting Yoon and letting him continue, so that they can stay in power, will not guarantee them that they will stay in power. If they want a Civil War, that is.

News Update:

Han Dong Hoon holds a news press:

He had opposed impeachment, but now he has changed his mind. According to him, Han has gotten information that President Yoon has not felt any regret for his coup attempt, and has instead, is still plotting a military takeover of South Korea. Han claims that President Yoon is no longer psychologically fit to rule the country, and he is a danger to the country which could be under violence if Yoon continues his ways. Han says Yoon must be removed NOW for the sake of the country.

So it looks like Yoon is still plotting with his supporters in the military as well as the police, giving them orders to arrest certain Democrat party politicians.
