President Yoon’s Attempt to Declare Martial Law Fails

I don’t get what Yoon was thinking declaring martial law knowing full well the Democratic Party who holds a majority in the National Assembly can just vote to end it. We all know the DP is conducting the impeachments in effort to protect their leader Lee Jae-myung from prosecution, but their had to be better response options than martial law:

President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law, accusing the nation’s opposition of paralyzing the government with “anti-state activities,” but the National Assembly voted to lift the decree hours later.

“Martial law is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korean forces and to protect the constitutional order of freedom,” Yoon said in an emergency national address televised live in late Tuesday.

It marks the first declaration of emergency martial law in South Korea since 1979.

The surprise announcement came after the opposition Democratic Party (DP) railroaded a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee, and submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.

Under the Constitution, the president can declare martial law in response to military needs during times of war, armed conflict, a national emergency, or when public safety and order require it.

Following the address, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, who was named as leader of martial law command, announced a decree banning all political activities, including protests and activities by political parties.

At at around 1 a.m, Wednesday, the 300-member National Assembly convened a plenary session to demand that Yoon lift martial law, with the resolution approved with 190 members present and 190 votes in favor.

With the motion’s passage, the martial law declaration is void, according to the parliamentary speaker’s office. (Yonhap)

You can read more the link, but Yoon was already very unpopular and this martial law decree will likely make him even more deeply disliked in Korea.

I have a number of distant relatives who are in and around Yoon’s inner circle. Got to talk to one recently this year. Quite a few of his senior advisors are 4th/5th republic loyalists. Notions of re-establishing military rule are not uncommon nor disliked. Potentially, Yoon might outright ignore parliament and attempt to impose martial law anyways. We will have to wait and see how the military reacts.

His approval rating hurts his chances, but much of the disapproval on the right will disappear overnight should he follow through on his campaign promises to purge the feminists and leftists from the government. That’s what ultimately won him the male vote and the election, and it’s those voters who have largely contributed to his declining approval. That agenda is now only possible by ignoring parliament. His approval rating might not even matter as this might just be an exit strategy for him to avoid prison. He activates the military, a general takes over, he quietly retires.

Of course this is all speculation, but you’d think Yoon would only pull the nuclear option like this in the face of a clear lack of votes in parliament if he had confidence the military would back him up regardless.

The martial law decree published shortly before lawmakers assembled in parliament declared all political and parliamentary activities to be prohibited.

Ahh, Yoon, what are you doing!? This is obviously a coup attempt, and if you’re going to push out a decree shutting down parliament, that’s the first group your have to detain so they can’t obviously delegitimize you with “voting”. The next obvious target is media.

This is why his approval rating sucks. His own support base has no reason to believe him competent. This incompetence painful to watch.

So let’s wait to see what all the MAGAs will respond with. The future of the US itself is looking more and more similar to what Yoon just pulled.

In this forum, I have often listed anti-democratic moves including attacks against democratic rights and the steady erosion of the free press. But I never expected that this lunatic would do something like this.

Interestingly, there’s a dead silence from the United States, from Biden, a strong supporter of Yoon. Is the US going to stand with Democracy and the Korean people, or are they going to look out for their US interests (to keep the US puppet in power and let him drain the Korean economy by moving all the Korean financial assets to the US)?

It looks like Yoon had the support of the Minister of Defence. But many in his own party didn’t even know. The National Assembly just shot down the Martial Law as unconstitutional. If the military refuses to back this lunatic, then the next logical step is to impeach the “thing”, and he and his supporters will be in prison, followed by a general election.

This could be a blessing in disguise, as Korea cannot wait another 3 years for this guy to be turfed out. It’s already on the brink of collapse.

GI Korea and his maggot supporters, looking mighty foolish right now. They had claimed that this was just fake news by the “Korean Left”.

Problem is Yoon didn’t arrest the communist at the same time as the martial law declaration.

The coup plan, under the guise of “martial law to save the country” has failed, as Yoon virtually with little to no support, is forced to lift the martial law.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/03/south-korea-yoon-martial-law/

The angry crowd is gathering, demanding impeachment followed by an immediate arrest for treason.

The judgment day is coming finally.

The Right Wing PPP party is now totally destroyed. Thank you Yoon.
Just in time before the Maggots come to power. Korea had no hope of dealing effectively with them, under Yoon. Lee Jae Myung who is in the running for president, has already said, there will be no more negotiations over USFK, if the Maggots break the US-KOR deal again, and demand another $10 billion a year. You can walk, and SK can get nukes.

@Korean Man

Biden was a “strong supporter” of Yoon? Wow, wonder why Yoon didn’t even bother telling him about this move.

What did the American left do when Maduro stole an election in Venezuela? Nothing. But yeah, MAGA has to somehow answer for Yoon because he’s a “conservative”.

The left sends people to jail for posting memes online. Stop waxing poetics about democracy when you rape it daily. MAGA alone couldn’t put Trump on top. He gained around 15% from the non GOP demo.

Reminder: Lee Jae Myung clearly and unambiguously stated it should be hard to make a small business.

If he, and his cronies get into power, small business will be killed off to make way for the multinationals and income redistribution of their middle class workers.

Smart people and free enterprise keeps Korea prosperous.

If Korea lets these people anywhere near the levers of power, they deserve the neo-feudalistc outcome.

The second biggest political loser once the dust settles is probably Han Dong-hoon. The image of him shaking hands with the opposition will come to haunt him.
