“There was a crackling sound from a luggage rack at the back of the plane and then, smoke emerged,” a passenger told Yonhap News Agency. “The smoke grew thicker and flames dropped from the rack as a flight attendant was bringing a fire extinguisher there.”

Possible Lithium-ion battery fire in overhead carryon. Looks similar to an ATA DC-10-40 fire that occurred on the handstand at ORD in the 80’s involving a mishandled oxygen generator. There have been multiple cabin fire accidents over the years, the thinking behind allowing lithium ion batteries in carryons while restricting them in checked baggage is that the fire can be observed and handled, only lithium battery fires aren’t that easy to deal with. No duck dna in the engine on this accident.
