JoeC,

In your honest opinion, how do you feel about net loss/gain of temporary ban on most people from majority Muslim nations versus a temporary ban on people from the UK?

I think one of those probably has more advantages than disadvantages. You can probably guess which one.

I think if most Americans are being honest, they would say the same.

If you’re asking for my opinion I’ll give one. However, I prefer not wasting my life arguing over differences of opinion, so I’ll be done with it after this.

I think both are bad ideas but I can not guess which could turn out worse on ‘net.’

Of course banning people from the UK because of one crazy guy was absurd sarcasm but it was meant to emphasize the bumper sticker phrase ‘properly vetted.’ I often wonder what people think they mean when they say that. Do they think it’s an absolute certification that person won’t turn out to be a deranged nut-job? Well that type of certainty is not possible.

Even if we were to someday have a situation where there were calls for banning immigrants from an allied country over something as silly as “Freedom Fries” it wouldn’t amount to much because these international political tiffs are soon ironed out by rational people. But when you start stigmatizing people by ethnicity and religion you could be stirring up greater ugliness internationally and domestically that will be harder to resolve because it will involve irrational people.

I suppose properly vetted means different things for different countries. Sure, there are no guarantees that anyone from anywhere is a decent human being, but it seems asinine to ask the American people to believe that anyone coming from Syria has been vetted to any reasonable standard.

That being said, there are “friendly” Muslim countries with stable governments who either dropped the ball or intentionally sent sleeper agents to perpetrate terrorist acts on U.S. citizens.

So maybe a ban on people from those nations isn’t such a bad idea.

The U.S. has no obligation to allow anyone to immigrate. When we do, it should be an invitation to assimilate and contribute to the country, not try to emulate inferior conditions found in their former homes or try to impose incompatible ideals on our citizens. People from those countries who can add to science, engineering, technology, or legitimate business endeavors should be allowed to apply and welcomed in as long as they don’t have any ties to or resemble anything close to being radicalized.

We can all pretend that all cultures are equal and that all religions have progressed to the same point, but that would be ignoring the obvious. There is one religion that causes more problems in the world than any of the others.

I’m sure CH could put it more eloquently or effectively than I could, but in short I am tired of America pretending that everyone has a place in the melting pot. We can incorporate a lot of different flavors, but dog shiit shouldn’t be one of them.

JoeC,

“But when you start stigmatizing people by ethnicity and religion you could be stirring up greater ugliness”

The problem(s) with this statement is that… nobody has proposed stigmatizing people by ethnicity… and… it is perfectly valid to stigmatize dangerous and intrusive belief structures.

While Islam is a religion, it is also a fascists political system… and maybe the only religion that has an order from God to overthrow governments that are non-islamic.

Many “moderate” Muslims ignore this clear order… but most of the “refugees” currently coming to America are from places and cultures that believe this is mandatory.

This attitude, as well as others within Islam, is completely incompatible with successful American values… and SHOULD be stigmatized… and clearly rejected.

Again, the promotion of wishful idealistic thinking over clear reality and the failure to be honest about the refugee situation and Islam’s place in the world is quite shocking.

Sorry if it seems like I am piling on, JoeC. I don’t think it’s a waste of time to debate on differences of opinion. As long as it is approached in an open, honest, and somewhat respectful manner, two opposing sides can often learn from another and at least understand why each other feels the way they do.

Submitting a snarky remark with no desire to explain or defend one’s (perhaps implied) point of view reminds me of a former Rokdropper named Glans.

Fatty Kim has had two students arrested (and probably “disappeared”) for questioning his legitimacy:

SEOUL, June 23 (UPI) — More North Koreans are questioning Kim Jong Un’s legitimacy, but authorities are cracking down on increased skepticism in the country.

A Pyongyang resident visiting Jagang Province along the China border told Radio Free Asia two students at Kim Il Sung University made an issue of Kim’s indifference to paying respects to Kim Il Sung at Mangyongdae – his grandfather’s designated birthplace.

Looks like we have motion in the backfield. I wonder if it will come to anything? If you have to MAKE the people love and respect you, do they?
