Are Google and Korea having another pissing contest?
I just noticed that when I go to Google Maps on a web browser or mobile app and view the satellite imagery for Korea (North or South) it maxes out at a very low resolution. Satellite imagery quality outside of Korea, including Japan and China are still good. Bing’s satellite imagery for Korea is also still ok.

The RoK doesn’t give access to it’s internal data to Google because they refuse to censor the maps. Either the RoK has this idiotic idea that DRPK (or other) spies rely on public internet mapping sites for recon or it’s an excuse to hide stuff from the public. In either case the RoK proves yet again it’s hardly an adult democracy. This is why Yongsan Garrison and other facilities appear as magical forests or mountain ranges in the middle of a city on Bing, Naver, Daum, or any other sites willing to give into the RoK’s censorship but on Google you can plainly see what’s there just not at level of detail you can on the ones with access to RoK data.

Google could just say screw the ROK gov’t – we don’t need your stinkin’ maps – we’ll just use commercial satellite imagery (not as good as the ROK maps – but still not bad). However, even if they did that, the forest in the middle of Yongsan-gu would still be there because governments can petition satellite owners to blur or obscure what they consider to be sensitive geographical areas. So either way – Google is screwed.
In unrelated news, I notice there are hundreds of people on the internet still expecting the gummint to provide free everything.

What really pisses me off about Google Maps in Korea is that you can’t use the app as a navigation device while driving because it won’t provide driving directions for a car – only for bus, train, or walking.
Thanks Guitard. Just checking the map down near Ulsan and I see on the map a place called Yangsan (양산), and inside it is a placed called Yungsan (영산). Most of us Americans say Yongsan (용산) without the long “o” sound for our favorite base. Now I know where these places are located. 🙂

While you so elegantly relayed this story to us in your usual fashion this event in addition to another from last night reaffirms that video/audio recording equipment be added to the list of critical equipment all officers carry when on duty. Ones that they cannot turn off btw…
This way when stuff like this happens, 1st-hand unbiased information is available for review to determine what if any further action needs to be taken and we squash all these half-a55ed “reports” of racism.

Out of all the police shootings of black men over the past few years that after further investigation showed the original narrative was built around BS (Gentle giant anyone?). However, this latest shooting in Baton Rouge does appear to be police incompetence that the involved officer should be held accountable for:
From the video it appears to me that one cop sees a gun in Sterling’s pocket and says the Sterling has a gun which the other cop interpreted to mean that Sterling had a gun in his hand. The cop appears to shoot, jump back and keep shooting because he thinks the guy has a gun in his hand even though he didn’t. It seems reasonable to me that cops should not unload on someone without physically seeing the gun for themselves in the person’s hand threatening someones life.

Trigger Happy Cops. There seems to be nothing else to this. They were pulled over for a cracked tail light, guy had a CCW permit, blown away after the cop initially requested to see his ID.
I’m usually Pro-Cop, but Holy Shyte! I can’t see how this is anything but Cold Blooded Murder.
I guess he could use the “Didn’t Intend To” excuse that seems so popular these days.

It just turns out the unarmed… er… armed black man was killed by a racist… er… not racist Chinese-American cop.

Anyone know where the line is between trigger happy and a guy with a gun squirming around unpredictably?
When I got stopped, the window was down, my documents were on the dashboard, and my hands were at 11-1 on the steering wheel. Guns were off my body and under the seat. This behavior should be part of drivers’ education. Cops love it so much that I got warnings instead of tickets.
When a perp is acting hinky, nervous cops start getting over-alert and trigger-happy. It is easy to blame the cop in these situations… but it is correct to put a great deal of blame on the behavior of the perp.
The other incident where it appears one cop yelled “gun” and the other cop thought that meant the perp was getting ready to use a gun can also have much of the blame on the perp… as it is better to shoot first when you believe he has a gun in his hand than lollygag around double checking to see if he has a gun in his hand.
Resist the Man in court, not on the street. You cannot win. Put your hands up, inform them you are carrying a gun, and follow instructions slowly and correctly.
Police brutality and poor judgement happens… but most (all?) of these cases which get media attention have one thing in common… needless resistance to police instructions and/or behavior that makes cops really nervous.
It is not a big imposition to prepare, act slowly and predictably while informing the officer of your actions and intentions, and follow instructions…
…especially when EVERY ONE of these “victims” have a rap sheet full of experience with police interaction.

Considering the sensationalism of the police shooting issue by the media and politicians the police ambush was bound to eventually happen. It will be interesting to see if Black Lives Matter was complicit in this because police are currently investigating them because the shooters seemed perfectly positioned to take out the policemen:

No Dallas Cop has been indicted for shooting in 40 years and 14 times cops walked in 2015 after shooting mostly unarmed people to death.
