I wonder what the purpose of this was. When I was in ROTC, our detachment would open up our rappel tower and let freshmen go down it during orientation. They did this as a recruiting tool but I don’t think anyone who participated signed up and got commissioned who wasn’t already of a mind to do so.

I was a Boy Scout leader when I was in the Navy. I remember Boy Scouts rappelling during Schofield Barracks Day.
Of course the Risk Averse Army didn’t let the kids rappel down a 30 foot vertical wall. We did the 10 foot slope.
