Protesters Gather to Block Expected Movement of Additional THAAD Launchers to Seongju

It looks like there could be chaos today in in Seongju as the US military tries to move the remaining launchers and equipment on to the THAAD site:

The U.S. military will deploy additional launchers for an advanced missile-defense system Thursday in a remote area of South Korea despite local protests, the defense ministry said.

Seoul said Monday that it had cleared the last administrative hurdle to installing four more launchers soon to complete the deployment of the anti-missile battery known as THAAD, aimed at countering the growing threat from the North.

The plan has met with regular protests in Seongju, the southeastern area where the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system is stationed.

Protesters gathered again Wednesday near the former golf course that is housing THAAD, saying they would try to try to block the entrance with cars and tractors.  [Stars & Stripes]

What’s Korean for “This is an unlawful assembly; disperse immediately or you will be sprayed with tear gas.”? 😯

‘What’s Korean for “This is an unlawful assembly; disperse immediately or you will be sprayed with tear gas.”? ‘

Does it matter?

I’ve only re-looked at what’s going on the ROK very recently. The whole THAAD thing freaks me out. I have no idea why any right-thinking person would object. It must be a NIMBY thing?

Or so I thought. It’s also China that is objecting in very hard terms that affect Korean business interests, so if I had to guess some of the protests are occurring with a lot of support from China.

Might want to consider it’s mainly that the old timers in Seongju don’t want it there because it makes their town a major war target. If THAAD wasn’t there, no one’d probably even notice it.

Not that it really matters now anyway since the DPRK’s being allowed to elevate war beyond the conventional…

Smokes, that concern has never been raised. Mostly BS environmental (the radiation will melt our cabage) and noise (so noisy the cows can’t sleep). This entire protest is a based on lies spread by agents and sympathizers of nK. Mostly led by Moon.

Hey I’m not doubting what you say. I’m just thinking if that was me living there I’d probably be like “Yeah, time to move cause things are pointing this way that’ve never pointed this way before…” 😉

I was on Ulleung-do in 1990, and the islanders were pissed because the ROKN was going to base some destroyers there. Their reasoning was the “makes us a target” thing. They said they had managed to duck out of the last Korean War, and would like to stay out of the next one.

I started hearing about THAAD from my Chinese colleagues a long time ago, as they wanted to apply some sort of litmus test for whether I was a good foreigner or a bad one. I was surprised at how much media attention the thing was receiving in China, so I was not surprised when China decided to be dicks and punish Korean companies over the whole thing.

My retort to my Chinese colleagues basically was “Okay, you have locks on your doors and alarm systems on your apartment and car right? Isn’t that unfair to burglars and car thieves?

The ABM treaties of the 1960’s between us and the Soviets must figure into this somehow.
