What if Mars doesn’t like cars?
It’s going to become the first Transformer.
Slightly off course. It’ll miss Mars, and will end up in the asteroid field.
But still a cool publicity stunt on top of being able to launch a heavy load into orbit.
Reminds me of reading “Rocket Ship Galileo” as a teen. Heinlein thought it would be private companies that would get us into space. Most of my life, it’s been a government agency of some sort, NASA for the US, the CCCP for the USSR, ESA for Europe and all the rest. Looks like Heinlein is finally being proven correct.
I’m all for privatization of the industry but yeah how’s it ok to just chuck a car into orbit? Haven’t we littered the solar system enough? Aren’t these the same a-hole’s promoting green automobiles? ❓
Someone tell me it’s got some worthwhile science equipment on it or something and that’s not just a f’ing car floating around…
“Looks like Heinlein is finally being proven correct.”
Ehh… not if what he said was “it would be private companies that would get us into space.” as the government’s already done that, like a while ago… decades. 😛
@Smokes, sending the roadster into space is cool publicity stunt to drive increased public interest in space. Considering all the media attention and cool pictures from the roadster in space I would say Elon Musk achieved his goal.
That car won’t have its showroom look for long. The effects of extreme ultraviolet light, temperature variations and extrem cosmic rays in the inner solar system will break down the plastics and paint making it unattractive in a couple of years.
When the aliens finally discover it they won’t be impressed.
I’d say sooner than a couple of years. Probably a pile of floating trash by now.
