South Korea has angered Japan by staging military drills near a contested island chain, even as it discusses scaling back joint “war games” with the US to de-escalate tensions with North Korea.

The South Korean military dispatched six warships, including the 3,200-ton destroyer Yangmanchun, and aircraft including F-15K fighter jets and Black Hawk helicopters to practice the defense of what South Korea calls the Dokdo Islands in waters east of the Korean Peninsula.
Something must be happening that needs a distraction.

They really needed those 2 warships to take back Dokdo.
People really need to work on their fake news identification skills. As soon as I saw the media spreading this image around of a kid in a cage I knew it was likely fake news:
BEIJING — Propaganda departments in China and North Korea were in full swing on Wednesday as Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, concluded a two-day tour of China that painted the once-reclusive autocrat as a forward-looking leader.
After meeting with President Xi Jinping and briefing him on the summit meeting with President Trump in Singapore last week, the North Korean leader was portrayed in the Chinese state media as eager to learn how to turn a developing nation into a global superpower.
In North Korea, a propaganda machine that for decades turned out anti-American slogans and that denigrated South Koreans struck a new conciliatory tone, publishing posters this week that heralded unity on the Korean Peninsula.
There will be some major upheaval in North Korea if this goes through. Is Kim canny enough to ride the tiger? Dictators often come to bad ends when they stop being tyrants and start “playing nice.”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has committed to the U.S. that North Korea will destroy the Ch’olsan County, North Pyongan province testing site, which sometimes is referred to as the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground, CBS News reports. This agreement was made when President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in Singapore earlier this month, administration officials confirmed. This is the missile test engine site that Trump had mentioned after their meeting, though at the time he did not name it.
North Korea has used the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground to test liquid propellant engines for its long range ballistic missiles. Experts also say that this site is believed to be where the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, which can target the U.S. mainland, was developed. This rocket engine test facility can be used for space launch and IBCM launching which are the delivery mechanism for nuclear weapons. Bob Carlin, a former North Korea intelligence adviser for the State Department North Korea, tells CBS News it is significant that the North is destroying this testing site because it is one of the largest in the country.
At the summit, Kim promised that North Korea would destroy a missile engine test stand “soon,” according to administration officials. But there is still no set timeline for the demolition that the White House is willing to publicly reveal.
Hmm… As always, I look for the “weasel words.” Today’s weasel words are “missile engine test stand.” (“Soon” is the other weasel word, and even the article writer saw that word and highlighted it with quotes)
I’m still here at White Sands Missile Range, and Engine Test Stands are pretty much a dime a dozen around here, both the ones in use and the museum pieces sitting over at the WSMR Missile Museum.
So, is Kim going to destroy the entire missile test facility, or just the stand they bolt the engine to for test firings? One is a major facility, the other falls under “Consumables.”
Maybe he’s getting rid of something important, maybe he’s just puttering around. Maybe I’m just a grouchy old fart, and need to trust people more. 😛

Jim Mattis says he is ‘not aware’ of any efforts by North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program in the wake of Kim-Trump summit
President Donald Trump said North Korea had returned on Wednesday the remains of 200 U.S. troops missing from the Korean War, although there was no official confirmation of the move from military authorities.
“We got back our great fallen heroes, the remains sent back today, already 200 got sent back,” Trump told a crowd of supporters during a rally in Duluth, Minnesota.
U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Tuesday that in coming days North Korea would hand over a “sizeable number” of remains to United Nations Command in South Korea, and they would then be transferred to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.
Not sure what the process is for identifying the remains, but I’m sure this will bring closure for several families who lost relatives during the Korean War.

When the US media repeatedly does things like this it only further validates the perception many people have of them as being biased.

China wants to develop infrastructure in North Korea, probably to get access to the rare earth minerals believed to be in the North Korean mountains. Smart phones use a number of rare earths, and North Korea may be sitting on $6-10trillion worth of the materials.

Yes, that’s Trillions, with a T.
