The kimchi and chopsticks thing tho. It’s one thing if they think I’m a tourist but it’s a whole nother level of dumb when I’ve already introduced myself.
I think this is all about getting twisted panties about nothing. Asians are not a monolithic bloc, and neither are any other groups of people. Not even Democrats.
The Chinese waitress at a local (North Texas) Chinese buffet was amazed when she saw how well I use chopsticks last weekend. And she thought my Korean wife was Chinese. The Japanese waitress at a nicer restaurant in San Francisco was amazed at my use of chopsticks and thought my wife was Japanese. In 20 years of frequenting Asian restaurants in the US and South Korea, we’ve seen similar things many times. And while it took me a while to master noodles with metal chopsticks, I had the wooden variety figured out somewhere around 1983, so I just smile and say thanks.
None of us is really more sophisticated than everyone else in every situation. Best to just smile and carry on. We might need their help later.
