China is just trying to peel off New Zealand from the US. The Chinese are sensing an opportunity now to bring them into their fold because the current Prime Minister used to be the President of the International Union of Socialist Youth. So they are signing these economic deals with the Kiwis to try and peel them off. They have been trying to peel Australia away from the US as well for years economically with all the natural resources deals they have in place there.
So essentially if say a conflict happens in the South China Sea, the Aussies and Kiwis would have to make a decision on whether to give up favorable economic deals with the Chinese or side with the US. Would these countries be willing to give up these favorable arrangements to side against the Chinese over island disputes with Southeast Asian countries? That is the dilemma the Chinese are trying to make for them. Without Aussie and Kiwi support it would make any US action in the South China Sea very difficult.

That’s good analysis, GI.
You’d think our ANZAC buddies would realize from History how this is likely to turn out; but there are people who choose “The Road to Serfdom” over personal responsibility and personal liberty.
Now NZ is joining communist China….sad. https://www.wefornews.com/chinese-ambassador-highlights-ties-with-nz-as-front-runner/
Not sure I understood that link. Is China agreeing to buy something from the Kiwis?
Or are the Kiwis celebrating their economic surrender?
