ROK Navy’s Newest Helicopter Carrier to Begin Operations in October
South Korea announced that they will put their 2nd helicopter carrier into operation in October of this year:
South Korea’s new 14,500-ton amphibious assault ship will be deployed in October with improved combat capabilities developed with the country’s own technologies, the military said Monday.
Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Boo Suk-jong presided over a commissioning ceremony for the landing platform helicopter (LPH) ship Marado at the southern port of Jinhae ahead of the planned deployment, according to the military.
Named after the country’s southernmost island, the Marado is South Korea’s second large-scale transport ship following the Dokdo, which was deployed in 2007.

When the ROKN drew up plans for an amphibious transport dock(LPD) it had a well deck and a helo deck at the rear.
Then the Japanese launch their Osumi class LPH and lo and behold the Korean LPD is turned into a LPH and they name it the Dokdo as a way of expressing up yours to the Japanese. (The Dokdo was launched when Roh Moo-hyun was president)
The Marado and her sister the Dokdo are bigger than the Osumis, but strangely have no separate hangar for the helicopters and they had no dedicated amphibious assault helos to boot until the deployment of the Marions.
They also have huge 3D air search radars in addition to the smaller 3D radars, which IMO is overkill, because the smaller ones especially the one on the Marado is sufficient enough to provide air defense for the ship.
The Dodko spends much of her time being a ‘ceremonial and publicity ship’ and is a symbol of the inability of the ROKN leadership to come to terms on what is REALLY needed to defend ROK waters against REAL threats.
