International Press Institute Says Korea’s Fake News Law Similar to Those Passed in Authoritarian Countries

These fake news laws are slippery slope because who defines what is fake news?:

International Press Institute Deputy Director Scott Griffen / From website of the International Press Institute

The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, executives and journalists dedicated to the protection and promotion of media freedom, has called for the withdrawal of a bill being pushed by the liberal ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) to punish media outlets producing alleged “fake news,” noting that many such laws are promulgated in “authoritarian countries.”

“In recent years, there has been a rapid growth of so-called fake news laws around the world. Many of these laws have been passed in authoritarian countries,” Scott Griffen, deputy director of the IPI, said in a recent email interview with The Korea Times.

Freedom of speech is sometimes hard to find in South Korea. Try wearing a “Fuck Moon Jae-in” tee shirt (in English or Korean) and see what happens. That said, Korea has a healthy protest culture, and I see radical signs and slogans all the time, so I guess the freedom-of-speech question often comes down to which boundaries you’re pushing against.

Kevin Alfred Strom, in 1993, wrote an essay that included the phrase

“To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize?”

So true.

The fact that the dude is a vile anti-semite, a racist, and a neo-nazi doesn’t alter the truth.

Even broken clocks are right twice a day…

Nothing will happen. Oh please, more drama.

OK, KM, you first. Post your video anonymously on YouTube and be sure to include some famous places in Seoul. You need not show your face; but you must show at least one police officer not arresting you. 10 minutes should be okay.

Not defending one of the commentators above, but under Korean law, a protest is defined as an activity involving two or more persons.

So if a single person goes around Gwanghwamun with signs saying “Down with Moon!” or “Moon shoud be imprisoned!’ or “Moon is the satan, himself!” (and there are plenty of those in Gwanghwamun), he or she will not be stopped by the police because since there is only one person involved, by law it is not a protest, and since the law does not apply here the police has no legal basis to take action.

Since it is by law not a protest, the person also does not need to apply for a permit to hold the protest which means he or she can come and go as he/she pleases.

The police also want a good day without much action, so they won’t waste time to tackle a guy or gal holding an anti-Moon sign or wearing an anti-Moon T-shirt.

So yes, no drama here and guys please get your facts straight.

Despite what you read in the news and the heavy handed manner of the prosecutors and such, South Korea is hardly a police state.

If you want to see Korea as a police state, get a time machine and go back to the time when Chun Doo-hwan was in power. Now that was a true police state.

setnaffa, the burden of proof is on the accuser.

Setnaffova’s list of programmed responses are limited at best, which explains the same dumb responses and the dependency on other identities such as liz and CH for backup.

Setnaffova’s masters should do the smart thing and reprogram it or better yet retire it.

Be careful. Leaked Setnaffa 2.0 technical specifications show it will include IP tracking technology, be linked to space-based energy weapons, and the Christian Morality Attenuating Response Module will be dialed down to 2, perhaps even lower.

Concern raised over S Korean treatment of Bloomberg reporter (AP, not a rightie site)

South Korean journalists fear new laws will muzzle media (DW.com, also not rightie)

Only two of many, many links regarding speech in the ROK.

Sorry, guys, but freedom of speech is an ongoing concern in South Korea. As the man said, get your facts straight. This isn’t drama—it’s truth. Meanwhile, I’m in no hurry to wear my “Fuck Moon Jae-in” tee shirt. And to be fair, we’re having a free-speech crisis in America, too, so I’m not saying any of this from a position of moral superiority. Everyone could stand to clean up his own house.

Actually, I was just thinking the chinabots seem keyed to respond to me; but TOK wants to show by his opinion only that they need not prive anything.

Thus, he aligns himself fully with KM/KP. C’est la vie.

Cancer treatments do make one a trifle cranky, so I apologize if I hurt any human’s feelz. However, i don’t believe what KM/KP/TOK write is factual without a video made in Korea actually proving it.

So put up or shut up.

Well, well.

Let’s see.

I say that there won’t be any drama if a person holds an anti-Moon sign in the middle of Gwanghwamun(which is true, come see for yourself). After I post my comment, KM tells setnaffa that the burden of proof is on the accuser and KP does one of his Russain bot claims.

That is followed by setnaffa, who seems to have little or no knowledge about how things in Korea are today, other than the things he reads on the Internet, calling me a liar and lumping me with KM and KP.

If you don’t agree or believe, fine, but name calling, false claims, and lashing out? That’s more like KM and KP’s MO.

On the other hand, I say the ROK Drop’s discussion boards are getting more lively by the day and are looking more like the Marmot’s Hole discussion boards of yesteryear.

Although most of the discussions seem to be dominated by five persons or bots.

Setnaffa’s cancer treatments have left him/her feeble and senile. Ignore what he/she says and you’ll be better off in the long run.

A lot of times, successful cancer treatments make those coming out alive on the other side into much more thoughtful people who frequently have their priorities in a more sensible order.

I don’t know if he is feeble but he certainly isn’t senile.

You just don’t like the truths that he clearly expresses.

Well, my fwebleness doesn’t apparently bother my doctors, my employer, nor my wife; but I ztill laugh at a guy who names himself after the poor loser who stood there in those videos being evicted after losing a hagwon position.

Look, I’m not perfect; but I am old enough to have seen what works and what doesn’t. And even though TOK pretends to misunderstand me, KM/KP run their Chinabot centipede through the living room without wiping their feet, and paint chip tries not to sound like a sockpuppet, one of you are willing to offer proof. I’m in Texas, so me wearing the shirt or carrying the sign would prove nothing. The laws about insulting the South Korean Government are different here.

I suggested the bot make a video to prove his assertion. TOK says it is not necessary because reasons. Okay. You’re all on the same side. No worries. We got it.

Robert Koehler had a great blog. I miss it. I miss Big Hominid (Hi Kevin!), Fatman, Korea Life, Nomad, Flying Yangban, and a half dozen more. GI does a wonderful job of keeping this up and we are–or should be–very grateful for his military service and continuing efforts to offer us a place to discuss Korean things.

I never stated TOK was a liar, just that his opinion is not the same as someone filming KM/KP wearing a shirt that insults Moon in front of a Korean policeman in Seoul and avoding arrest. If his opinion is correct, should be no problem to anyone with a smartphone to film the event, create a throw-away google email account, post the video as private, and post the link here.

That might be tough on an ESL person, so I typed it very slowly. (Insert feeble smile here)
