Sounds a bit racist to me… but my old-timey values are quickly going out of date.
With all the support for actual Nazis and promotion of child trannies, I suppose dropping the Han and keeping the Gook is pretty reasonable compared to the rest of pop culture.
Would it be more clear if we added “land” to it?
Gookland?
I’m not fully comfortable with this but it isn’t my choice.

The younger generations are trading in profound sadness for a cheap fake knockoff teenage angst. Han->Hell Joseon. Very (fake) American in a way, and very bitter for the traditionalists/conservatives. Korea is being forcibly Americanized by Koreans indoctrinated in American liberal arts colleges. Yale, Harvard, and Princeton lord supreme wokeness over everyone. Even supposedly conservatives Korean newspapers like Chosun ilbo now read like Harvard Crimson.
The whole article itselt is virtue signaling like any other leftist American college student.
“With the achievement of prosperity and democracy, the notion of an essential character defined by a profound sorrow from trauma and unrealised potential no longer seems appropriate.”
The utter ignorance. The collapse of the 4th and 5th republics has only resulted in ever greater political instability and corruption. Political normalization of communists in RoK put national survival at real risk only moderated by a giant US Military presence. DPRK birthrate is now likely higher than in RoK. Thank you America for the feminism. There is no competition if one side doesn’t even show up in the future. Eventually America is going to lose interest as domestic problems become priority and then confederation on Chinese terms is on the table.
RoK could have been a strong military state with the nuclear force to ensure state survival, but all that crumbled with “democratization” the Harvard types jerk off to. And of course State Department (Harvard’s US Government branch) has facilitated all of this while more recently pushing DEI in RoK.
So I think Han is still an apt word. RoK has been colonized by Harvard and and most don’t even realize it. I would go as far as say Han is a word that can be brought over to America as the conquest and colonization of legacy America by the woke is especially bitter.
The translation of progressive to Russian is communist. America’s progressive era started with a mass influx of Eastern European immigrants. Most of whom were progressive. Progressive was always a euphemism for communist. A euphemism that even the progressives forgot. Many of the descendants of the Trotskyites ended up becoming neoconservative.
In effect US government has been communist since 1930s. Now that’s Han.
“I have just one purpose … and that is to build up a strong progressive Republican Party in this country.
If the right-wing wants a fight, they are going to get it … before I end up, either this Republican Party will reflect progressivism or I won’t be with them anymore.” Dwight D. Eisenhower

The article reads like Chinese agitprop, as they think they’re the only “han” that matters.
But each person has a responsibility to find out for themselves what they should believe.
Partly because I’m older than dirt (if you ask our Chinabots), and partly because I have read books and spoken with people who made History happen, I tend to view articles like this with the contempt they deserve
Are the US “Ivy League” universities corrupt? Yes. And both Soviet and Chinese money were behind much of that. People born with a silver spoon in their mouth who had some sort of Buddhist epiphany and decided their sin-guilt was somehow the fault of the freedoms their country provided. Poppycock. Balderdash. Stuff and nonsense.
Look, we’re all sinners who need a Savior. The only One is Jesus Christ. As Blaise Pascal wrote, we all have a God-shaped void inside that only Christ can fill.
America has a lot of failings. To suggest any form of communism is better is a lie, whether said with malicious intent or contemptible naivete.
To suggest South Korea must give up their traditional values and beliefs because of so-called “American” influence is likewise contemptible.
Just publish your ideas. If they’re better, the People will accept them. Don’t be a sap for Beijing.

Oh yes… Eisenhower gave us Nixon, so take his stuff with a grain of salt, too.
Sooooo… if we drop the Han…
…that just leaves…
…uh…
Gook?
