Former Japanese Soldier Says that Sexual Harassment was Rampant in Her Unit
It looks like the Japanese Self Defense Force is having its own “Me-Too” moment:
A former Japanese soldier who came forward with her sexual misconduct case said Monday that harassment was as rampant in her army unit as if “part of daily communication.”
Rina Gonoi filed the case last year with the Defense Ministry, but it was dropped. She demanded it to be reinvestigated earlier this year, saying she had suffered multiple assaults by a number of male colleagues, causing her to give up her military career.
In response, Japan’s army in September acknowledged part of the misconduct and apologized, and last week fired five servicemen and punished four others. The Defense Ministry also announced interim results of a rare organization-wide investigation that found over 100 similar complaints and other forms of misconduct totalling more than 1,400.
In announcing the punishments last Thursday, army chief Yoshihide Yoshida repeated his apology to Gonoi and said he felt a strong sense of responsibility over her sorrow and pain. He also said he took the problem seriously and was determined to eradicate such misconduct.
“At a unit I belonged to, sexual harassment was so rampant it was carried out as if a part of communication and there was a loss of sensitivity,” Gonoi told reporters Monday. She said the punishments in her case were “appropriate,” but added that other soldiers who looked the other way should have been also held accountable.

I had read previously that she does judo and that was one of the reasons for her sexual harassment complaint, men were coming up to her and putting her into judo holds.
GI, it’s not for me to judge the gender of anyone from a single news photo; but “she” does not look like someone I’d want to put into a “judo” hold.
Fortunately for me, as “she” could probably kill me with one finger…
She seems to have mistaken being treated as one of the boys for sexual harassment.
Men who do judo come up and put each other into judo holds.
I dont care enough to look into it… because every time i do, my suspicions are confirmed… but none of the circumstantial evidence points to “sexual” harassment.
If anybody has evidence to the contrary, kindly post here and maybe it is worth a deeper look.

That certainly sounds like a legit complaint.
Then I look at her and I try to imagine how the siren call of a innocent cauliflower-eared judo dyke enticed superiors to touch her breasts and forced her to touch their private parts…
…and it really doesn’t mesh with my lived experience.
I am not Japanese and I have never watched a day of tentacle pr0n so maybe i just don’t understand the Japanese mindset.
But I have some suspicion if one were to know the details of this, the real story wouldn’t be quite what she and the media are promoting.
We all have seen a person who wants to be one of the boys until they get treated like one of the boys.
So, CH, are you saying the guys in her unit are all gay? (“Not that there’s anything wrong with that” as Seinfeld famously stated.)
It is not really clear what it means without more information.
Guys have no problem with an undertone of sexuality in a lot of situations where real sexuality is hard to come by…
…and very straight guys will flirt with some homoeroticism that may look like full homo-lite to an unbiased observer. This may even be slighty physical.
Introduce someone demanding to be treated equally… and dishing it out as good as any.
But then when they have to take a little… well… suddenly different standards are demanded.
We have probably all seen more smack-talking dykes who had no problem with physical contact when the power dynamic was in their favor than guys arbitrarily doing what she described in this situation.
That holds especially true in the current global me-too environment that Korea and Japan are both a part of.
It is likely she played a bigger roll in what happened but due to me-too paranoia and zero-defect culture, we will never know.
