As Mask Mandate Ends, COVID Cases Remain Low in South Korea

I can remember the days when 18,871 COVID cases in South Korea had people in a panic and now people are just accepting it like the flu. However, I still expect Koreans to continue to wear their masks for quite some time even though the mandate has ended:

South Korea’s new coronavirus cases fell below 20,000 on Sunday, just a day ahead of the country’s planned lifting of a mask mandate for indoor places that has been in place for more than three years.

The country reported 18,871 new cases, including 37 from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 30,149,601, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The daily caseload had been above 30,000 for the second straight day Friday due to increased tests after the Lunar New Year holiday that ended Tuesday, before falling to 23,612 on Saturday.

Except the mandate’s not ending for things like public transportation, correct?

Correct. And as CH pointed out earlier, even taxis.

Actual freedom is contracting all around the world.

Setnaffa,

Yeah, I talked with the taxi driver on my way to work this morning because I was curious as to whether taxis counted as “public transportation.” The cabbie said the loosening of the mandate did NOT apply to buses, subways, taxis, hospitals, and pharmacies(!). I knew about the hospitals but didn’t know about the pharmacies.

Well, I guess people accept being serfs a lot easier in some places than others. Truly sad.

They no longer require masks in cancer clinics across much of Texas. Not sure about MD Anderson in Houston; but I will find out in a couple months.

F’ing face diapers, worthless. Never worked, known not to work but still forced on the masses.

I think the reason for this half-assed measure can be attributed to a compromise between the government and the so-called “experts”.

The government may have been eager to get rid of the mandate altogether but the so called “experts” who advise the government may not have been too crazy about the loosening.

So to get those “experts” on board and not have them contradict the government, the government probably reached a compromise which we are seeing now.

I say give it a couple of months.

After that I wouldn’t surprised if the government convinces(or corners) the “experts” and lifts the mandate altogether.
