Staffless Stores Continue to Grow in Japan

Only a high trust society could pull this off. Could you imagine what would happen in parts of the U.S. that had staffless stores?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, unmanned shops drew interest as a way to prevent infection and cater to contact-averse customers. Now such shops are again in the spotlight as a means to help solve serious labor shortages. Research is underway on systems to run unmanned shops safely and efficiently, and such systems have been introduced by a wide range of businesses, including cosmetics companies and a bookstores.

In May, cosmetics company Orbis Inc., based in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, opened an unstaffed store in the Granduo Tachikawa shopping mall at JR Tachikawa Station. While the company has 93 directly managed shops across the nation, this is the company’s first unstaffed shop. The shop is small, about 7 square meters, and offers about 90 cosmetics, such as lotions and serums. When a customer picks up a product, several cameras installed in the ceiling and a weight sensor installed in the shelf instantly recognize the product. The customer then pays the amount displayed on a cash register screen, and a gate opens to let the customer out.

I was pretty shocked to see watermelons (35,000+ Won) in Korea being stored outside the grocery stores even at night. Just an implicit trust that people wouldn’t steal. Shoplifting obviously wasn’t a problem. Meanwhile in America…

I’m potentially going to visit LA. Hopefully I won’t get randomly stabbed by some homeless schizo on fentanyl.

Youngsters, joggers, gentle giants, and aspiring DJs would pick it clean.

They pick it clean even with staff.

The people who do this only respond to violence. Everybody understands violence.

To be fair, this was the Democrats’ plan all along. They want everyone broke, starving, unemployed, and begging for a handful of millet with no place but the government to find it.

Staffless stores are nothing new in South Korea too. They’re all over the places. It’s due to two things. One to combat staff shortage, and two for these cheap skate store owners for not to pay the higher salary necessary to keep the staff. When the wages are not rising, people won’t spend their money on the economy.

Amazon has plenty of these stores; the difference is that they collect your payment information before entry rather than allowing payment in cash.

“Life has really improved a ton for residents after that defund the police movement.”

One would think lower socioeconomic communities affected by Defund the Police would stop voting for liberal candidates promising to defund the police and look for someone promising Law and Order.

One would be wrong.

You know why poor people are poor?

Because they are fúcking stupid.

I really like the 24-hour staffless pet store in Dunpo. They sell everything, including expensive strollers in there.
