President Yoon Likely to Face Impeachment and Possibly Treason Charges

The Democratic Party would need to get 8 votes from President Yoon’s People Power Party to impeach him. It will be interesting to see what the PPP does because its leadership has clashed with Yoon as well. If the PPP decides to support impeachment they are essentially handing the Presidency to Lee Jae-myung and the Korean left. However if the PPP does decide to support impeachment I can’t really blame them because the martial law attempt was preposterous:

President Yoon Suk Yeol has come under growing attacks from the main opposition party to face impeachment or charges of treason, in the wake of his short-lived attempt to impose martial law that was blocked by the National Assembly. (Yonhap)

You can read more at the link, but any treason charges is going to depend on if the Constitutional Court finds that what Yoon did was Constitutional or not.

As someone from reddit who was there to block the military points out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/korea/comments/1h6gft9/i_blocked_707th_unit_soldiers_from_storming_the/

Yoon’s coup had no way of succeeding, only a dummy like him thought it would have any chance of success. It failed because the Korean military refused to take orders to take over the National Assembly. No President since 1980, ever dared to call in the military to squash the opposition party. But Yoon, a fossil from the 1970s, never thought that the military would disobey him.

What Yoon and his old right-wing cohorts failed to realize is that the Korean military will never point their guns again to the Korean people, because they are drafted young people in their 20’s who are highly educated. There’s no way they would kill their fellow Koreans, just because a lunatic President told them to do so. They know the history of bloody 1980, and they know who they side with.

Yoon is toast. If he doesn’t resign, impeachment will follow. If the PPP party does not support the impeachment, there will be massive street protests until they do. The history is about to repeat. Whether he’s impeached or resign, he will face the wrath of the public, and he will be charged with unconstitutional use of the Martial Law to suppress the political opposition. That’s called a treason. You all kept laughing at me whenever I said Yoon was a traitor to Korea, well here it is, it’s now a reality.
