ROK Drop Recognized by Oh My News
|This was unexpected, via the Marmot, I found out that Oh My News wrote an article about the English language Korea blogs. Most of the article was about the Marmot’s Hole and the former Korea Life Blog, but some of the other Korea based bloggers were mentioned in the article.Â
I was mentioned as an example of a right wing blog because I bring up negative issues from Korea. I consider myself conservative, but negative I don’t agree with. It just so happens that many of the issues going on in Korea are of a negative type. How can I put a positive spin on recent USFK issues? How can I put a positive spin on some of the nonsense going on with the anti-US groups? How can I put a positive spin on anything North Korea related? These are all major issues going on in Korea that don’t lend a whole lot to be positive about thus the blog reflects that.Â
I’m anti-Roh, but who isn’t now a days in Korea when the good old prez has an approval rating around 8% last I checked? However, if President Roh took my suggestion, and took the subway up to Uijongbu from Cheongwadae and thanked 2ID soldiers for sacrificing a year away from their families to come help defend Korea than I would write about that and thank him for doing such a thing and that would be a positive story. Since he doesn’t, there is nothing else Roh is doing now to write about.Â
Anyway it is always nice to be recognized even if it is from Oh My News which are partly responsible for bringing President Roh to power and brought us such classic pieces of journalism as this here. Â
I think this blog gives Korea a fairer shake than it actually deserves. I don’t see it now, but remember the “Things I like about Korea†pages as well.
Richardson, the Things I Like About Korea album is still on my sidebar, I just transferred it over to Flickr from the Tripod system it was on before.
I always enjoy reading your blog, and find it to be one of the most balanced English-language Korea blogs. Whatever Ohmynews may say, I know many South Koreans who would agree with you. The only reason why you may not hear from them through the local media is because they're busy with their jobs and families, and not spending their days trying to climb over the wall of the US embassy.
But does a Korea based blog need to kiss ass in order to be taken seriously? This is a blog written specifically about issues involving the US military and Korea, be it the military presence, North Korea, or the various PR issues that come up (ie raping an elderly women). "I like the sophisticated train system" does not really have a place amongst the regular posts and truly does belong on the side bar at best. No, I think only blogs that don't kiss ass can be taken seriously, and to me, this is a serious blog, that doesn't have time to deal with the daily events that really don't have any effect on the main issues.
If this were an all-inclusive Korea blog, perhaps the criticism would be warranted, but as far as I've been able to tell, this is not an all-inclusive Korea blog, but a very specialized Korea blog; one specialized in an area where there is very little to praise.
At least you got some coverage,
this is a good outlet to let people/soldiers speak about their perceptions of Korea..be it good or bad.
From The GreaterSeoul to corrupt cabbies, to anti whatever slander.
Your blog is informative.
