Japanese Self Defense Force Has a New Mascot

In another sign of rising militarism in Japan, the Japanese military has chosen a character to represent the SDF, Prince Pickles:

Now compare the SDF mascot to the Korean Army mascot Hogugy:

I think it is safe to say Hogugy could whoop Prince Pickles ass.  Rest easy Korea, Dokdo is still safe for now.

I could not stop laughing and rolling on the ground when I read this. I think you can also post this under your Dokdo Madness subject.

BTW, do you think having cartoon mascots work to the benefit of the military image? I know this will never work for the US military, but in certain Asian countries it seem to work.

Just curious as to your thoughts on this.

If this was tried in the US it would never work, however with Asia's appetite for anything cute, it does work. Plus the military in ROK likes to show a softer image than the hard ass ROK Army image they are usually associated with.
