Pig Slaughtering GI?
|I have seen USFK accused of a lot of ridiculous things in Korea, but this one takes the cake. I was walking through Myeongdong the other day and in the middle of this busy Seoul shopping district was a group of what appeared to be college aged students who were collecting signatures for a petition to stop pig slaughtering. Apparently a veteran’s group and some local politicians slaughtered a pig during a recent protest. The petitioners weren’t happy about it and to show their displeasure they hoped to have people sign their petition after reading this flyer:
Normally I would hardly care about something like this and just walk on by. However something immediately caught my attention. To help make their case the group had a large scale blow up of pictures from the pig slaughter and were making anti-military statements. Here is what caught my eye, in the first blow up picture, there appeared to be a USFK soldier participating in the pig slaughter:
I was immediately suspicious of this because I just found it absurd that anyone in USFK would be involved in a veteran’s protest much less involved in slaughtering a pig. Â The petitioners didn’t have the signs labeled with anything anti-USFK but their comments as well as the intent of prominently displaying this photograph like they did was clear, they were linking USFK to this pig slaughter.
My wife and I were standing there within a large crowd of people who had gathered around the pictures and my mother in law who was with us asked me why USFK was involved in a pig slaughter? Probably everyone else in the crowd was thinking the same thing. You can actually see pictures of the crowd around their booth in Myeongdong on the group’s website here and then scrolling to the bottom of the page.
After looking closely at the picture I could tell whoever was wearing the American Army Combat Uniform (ACU) was not a USFK soldier. The person in the picture if you look closely is wearing tennis shoes. Even further more the person is wearing non-military issue gloves. You can’t tell to well from the quality of the picture I took, but the gloves in the original picture definitely had name brand markings on them and were not military issue gloves. Also notice how the picture was cropped in order to not see the head of the supposed USFK soldier. These inconsistencies lead me to greatly doubt any involvement of USFK.
However, the damage has already been done and who knows how many thousands of people are now walking around thinking USFK was involved in the slaughter of some pig that USFK actually had nothing to do with. Just another incident to feed the low level hum of anti-Americanism as well as the ever increasing anti-ROK Army sentiment in the country.
The pig slaughter was blogged about at the Marmots Hole a few weeks ago. I don't know whether Koreans in general are aware of the story. I did not see any mention at all of USFK in any of the Korean language text on the flyer or at the website. In one of the website photos, a Korean man is clearly visible pulling at one of the pig's legs and the Korean flag is in the background.
Hey, man, pictures never lie!
Here is an active duty Army guy, fully in uniform, LEADING a demonstration promoting "DOWN WITH THE COLONIAL OCCUPATION OF IRAQ!"

…or it could be spun that way… if you believe everything you see.
Kinda like when you have to hold the boards and only realize what it means later when you see the video. (If you don't know what I'm talking about here, don't worry about it).
I don't know, GI… you might be reading too much into this. The story is already out to the public with no mention of USFK. I can't see a group of college students stirring up much anti-USFK sentiment because of a cropped picture of ACUs in an event which was already shown on TV without any USFK involvement.
Living on the local economy, I don't see ANY proactive anti-USFK/anti-American yapping unless there is a grandma rape or taxi theft/beating/stabbing… and, even then, it fades away quickly in typical Korean fashion to be replaced by the next emotional crisis… not exactly forgotten, though.
(As a side note, it sure has been refreshingly quiet lately on the USFK serious crime blotter. I guess congratulations are in order.)
J!
I think you're reading too much into the pictures. The caption on the bottom picture clearly says this took place during a protest. Besides, those pictures were run in no less a fountain of pro-North Korean, anti-USFK agitprop as the Chosun Ilbo:

In fact, judging from a look at the photos you've placed in the post and the groups's website, knowledge of the "pig dismembering" incident itself (which was carried out by farmers protesting the relocation of a ROK Special Forces base to their town), and the fact that the incident was BIG news when it happened and almost everyone looking at those photos would know exactly what they were, I'd say — unless you saw or heard something I'm missing — that you may have misunderstood the nature of the Myeongdong protest. It had nothing to do with USFK.
BTW, here's the post I did on it a couple of weeks ago:

I wonder if the average Korean associates ACUs with USFK? Of course, anyone living around a US military base would ~ but what about farmer Kim out in the middle Cholla Province?
Even though USFK is never mentioned, it still can have an effect ~ much like a can of Coke does in a movie set when people see it sitting on a table around which the actors are sitting talking. No one mentions the Coke ~ but it's there for everyone to see. And that's why companies like Coca Cola pay to make sure it's a can of Coke and not a can of Pepsi.
It's all about the subtle influences things like this can have.
You can buy ACU material at Dongdaemun. The fabric shops have it.
The blow up picture with the ACUs was the very first and most prominent picture they had posted. Like I mentioned the protesters never said anything about USFK or even the ROK Army for that matter they were against "militarism" and animal abuse.
My mother law was with us and she asked me why a USFK soldier was involved in this protest because it didn't make any sense. That is what made me wonder how many other people were thinking the same thing?
Check out the "GI" in Uniform…He's wearing a recruiting Patch and a recruiting badge, so that would make him none other than….yep, you guessed it…a recruiter!! and with that being said, there is NO WAY a recruiter would be at such a protest, unless he loaned his uniform to his buddy for the day, which is equally as unlikely…

Come on GI, Even some of GI loves to eat Sam Gyup Sal. Just admit it. Cooked Samgyupsal on Lettuce with DenJang and wash it down with soju. Hmmmmm!!!!!
Is protesters protesting against eating pork or just against killing piglet? I wonder if these protesters are vegans who is against eating animal. I rather see PETA models than these protesters. At least Christina Cho is something to look at.
The pig slaughtering was a waste of samgyupsal. That is the real tragedy of this incident. 😉
You are right about Christina Cho though. The pig slaughtering activists offered no eye candy at all.
Who cares if a GI helped slaughter a pig. Anyone up for some samgyubsal and soju? 🙂
