Kim Jong-un Calls for Return of North Koreans Who Defected On His Birthday

Like any of these reports from anonymous sources, treated them with a healthy dose of skepticism because who knows if they are true:

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has demanded that officials “go to South Korea if they have to” to arrest those who defected on his birthday, according to Radio Free Asia (RFA).

The non-profit news outlet quoted internal sources as saying Kim was furious when told that 16 North Koreans defected on February 16.

“During Kim’s birthday, the nation was under a special warning period for defecting, and when reported by his officials, Kim ordered them to send out an arrest squad to catch the ‘fleed family,'” the source was quoted as saying.

The source also said officials were threatened with punishment if they failed to bring back the defectors from North Hamgyong Province.  [Korea Times]

Sounds like it might be a good movie plot…

Uhhh, North Hamgyong Province is in North Korea so they didn’t actually defect. Someone needs to explain geography to the Dear Leader.

It has always been a crime to defect, but it’s even MORE of a crime if you defect on KJU’s birthday? I’m hoping that the threatened officials (and others) now understand that it’s better NOT to report such defections.

My favorite lines from the article were: A North Korean farmer identified as Chang Chol San told KCNA, “We have begun to plant the season’s first crops in glory’s vegetable field. This year we will make this the victorious site of increased grain production.”

“Glory’s vegetable field?” “Victorious site of grain production?” Does the DPRK do anything that isn’t somehow presented as epic and awesome?

Joking aside, if the primary food production area is inder stress due to lack of water, does this mean it is more likely or less likely that the DPRK will commit provocations? I know that if the ROK, China and/or the U.S. send food, it is rebranded from “Humanitarian Aid” to “Tribute to Our Great Leaders, uh, Greatness!”
