The Signs of Japanese Imperialism

I don’t know if this says more about the real state of Japanese militarism or those who claim to be concerned about it.  The Japanese Defense Ministry has announced their new logo:

According to Younghusband, the Defense Ministry requested design ideas for the new logo from the public and 767 designs were submitted and they chose this one.  It looks like a big, green monster ready to take over the world.  With a logo like this it is clear another clear another Pearl Harbor is right around the corner.  Why didn’t they design a nice peaceful logo like the ROK Ministry of National Defense:

The signs of rising Japanese imperialism don’t just stop with this logo, they even have aggressive looking anime characters to distribute their new defense policies:

Then how can we forget that warmonger in waiting Prince Pickles:

Admiral Yamamoto has nothing on Prince Pickles.

Then finally the ultimate sign of the rising tide of Japanese Imperialism are their new war glorifying recruiting commercials.  Yes, the signs are clear, Japanese Imperialism is something be feared.  Prepare the defenses around Dokdo because the invasion could come at any moment from Prince Pickles and his dancing, singing sailors.

"Like Elementary School Kids"

This article from the Joong Ang Ilbo about the possible sale of the F-22 fighter plane to Japan I found quite interesting:

When reports surfaced last month that Japan is trying to purchase the new F-22 Raptor, the most advanced U.S. fighter plane, the news had a ripple effect in the region.
Despite Korea’s drive to modernize its air force, the ultra-modern plane could alter the balance of air power and spark a drive by South Korea and China to catch up.
The Raptor, which is so far banned from export, is felt to be so far superior to anything else in the air that Japan would gain an immediate regional edge if it flies the plane. “Whatever is out there cannot match up with it,” retired Air Force general Keum Ki-hyun said of the F-22. “It’s like elementary school kids trying to win a fight against college students.”

Well that is only fitting because the South Korean government has been acting "like elementary school kids".  Where the heck has the ROK government been for the last five years, to busy drinking sunshine Kool-Aid?  While the South Korean government has been busy undermining the US-ROK alliance at every turn and using anti-Americanism for short term domestic political gain for the past five years, the Japanese government has been busy building stronger political and defense relations with the US.  The elementary school kid credentials of the ROK government is further apparent by their concerns that the possible purchase of the F-22 by Japan is some kind of sign of an impending attack on Dokdo. Is it any wonder why the F-22 is being sold to Japan and not to South Korea?

Korean Government "Tense" Over East Sea Issue

The Chosun has an article today that has all you would possibly ever wanted to know about the greatest pressing issue of our time, no not Dokdo, but the Sea of Japan / East Sea issue:

The government is tense ahead of the International Hydrographic Organization conference in Monaco next Monday, which is expected to decide the official name of the body of water dividing Korea and Japan. The body is to settle whether a new edition of "Limits of Oceans and Seas," a guide book for map makers around the globe, will use both "East Sea," Korea’s name, and "Sea of Japan." In a closed-door meeting on Thursday, Korean officials reportedly stressed the need to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

I find it quite interesting that the Korean government is tense over this East Sea / Sea of Japan nonsense, but could care less about 485 South Korean civilians kidnapped by the North Koreans or the many North Korean defectors trying to come to South Korea which the ROK government continues to be indifferent if not unhelpful to.

Using the logic the Korean government is using to lobby the IHO to have the Sea of Japan permanently called the East Sea doesn’t that mean that the IHO would also have to change the name of the Korea Strait that runs between Korea and Japan?

Things to Do in Korea: Museum for Freedom and Peacekeeping

museum1

For soldiers stationed in the Camp Casey area, a day trip I highly recommend is a visit to the Museum for Freedom and Peacekeeping. The museum is fairly new because it opened only three years ago and admission is free for soldiers. The museum provides a number of good displays show casing the history of the Korean War along with other displays highlighting the various peacekeeping missions the Korean Army has or is currently participating in.

South Korea to Develop E-bombs

I  found this to be curious:

Ahn Dong-Mahn, head of the Agency for Defence Development (ADD), also said South Korea had joined the international race to develop electromagnetic E-bombs capable of disabling enemy computers and radio or radar receivers.

In an interview with the Korea Defence Daily, Ahn said the agency and 16 other defence companies planned to develop a medium-range ground-to-air missile, known as Iron Hawk-II, by 2011.

Doesn’t North Korea need to first have computers and other electronics to disable?  Unless of course this is really meant for the upcoming Dokdo/Takeshima War.

"No Evidence to Prove There Was Coercion"

The recent historical dispute to flair up between Korea and Japan is the comfort women issue.  What sparked the latest controversy was US Congressman Mike Honda’s resolution to condemn Japan for World War II sexual slavery and demand an apology from the Prime Minister of Japan.  Like I mentioned before the Japanese Prime Minister should apologize, but not because of some resolution from Mike Honda who would rather condemn sexual slavery of Koreans that happened 60 years ago, but is willing to make excuses for sexual slavery of Koreans happening today in China.

With that said, I cannot believe the Japanese Prime Minister who has at least tried to be conciliatory about the Yasukuni issue would say something as outrageous as this (via Marmot):

Japan’s nationalist prime minister denied Thursday that the country’s military forced women into sexual slavery during World War II, casting doubt on a past government apology and jeopardizing a fragile detente with his Asian neighbors.

The comments by Shinzo Abe, a member of a group of lawmakers pushing to roll back a 1993 apology to the sex slaves, were his clearest statement as prime minister on military brothels known in Japan as “comfort stations.”

Historians say some 200,000 women — mostly from Korea and China — served in the Japanese military brothels throughout Asia in the 1930s and 1940s. Many victims say they were kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery by Japanese troops.

But Abe, who since taking office in September has promoted patriotism in Japan’s schools and a more assertive foreign policy, told reporters there was no proof the women were forced into prostitution.

“The fact is, there is no evidence to prove there was coercion,” Abe said.

His remarks contradicted evidence in Japanese documents unearthed in 1992 that historians said showed military authorities had a direct role in working with contractors to forcibly procure women for the brothels.

There is some debate over the translation of what Prime Minister Abe said, but clearly he is out of line on this issue simply because he is going against the official recognition and apology the Japanese government gave in 1993 to the women effected by World War II sexual slavery.  The Japanese government has clearly all ready accepted the fact that the Imperial Japanese Army committed sexual slavery of primarily Korean women, but why is Prime Minister Abe trying to change the Japanese government’s stance on this issue?  I know he is sagging in the opinion polls in Japan, but is this really going to give him a boost?

Plus he is allowing the demagogues like President Roh in South Korea to come out and condemn him:

Japan must atone for the atrocities committed during World World Two through concrete measures, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said on Thursday, adding it was key to better ties between the two countries.

Roh in a speech marking the 1919 uprising in Korea against Japanese colonial rule said the international community had not forgiven Tokyo for its wartime aggression.

"(Japan) may try to cover the sky with its hand, but we were able to confirm once again that the international community does not forgive the atrocities committed by imperial Japan," the South Korean president said.

Japan colonized the Korean peninsula from 1910 until its defeat in World War Two in 1945. Former Japanese prime ministers have apologized for the country’s colonial past, but Roh has said Tokyo had not done enough to back its words with action.

"We hope that Japan will not try to glorify or justify a mistaken past, but instead show sincerity by following its conscience and the international community’s generally accepted precedent," he said.

I consider President Roh and demagogue on this issue simply because he has no creditability to advocate for these women when he continues to do absolutely nothing about the plight of North Korean sex slaves in China now.  What are the chances President Roh would make a statement like this towards China’s modern day sexual slavery of Korean women?

Like I mentioned before in regards to the Yasukuni issue the historical problems with its Asian neighbors is what is preventing Japan from truly reaching the global status it should have for a nation of 120 million people with the world’s second largest economy.  For a nation that wants a seat on the UN Security Council I really have to wonder if the nation can have the creditability to handle the major pressing issues of the day.  If Japan can’t even come to a resolution over the Yasukuni, comfort women, or Dokdo conflicts how can we expect them to handle something as volatile as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict?

A Solution to the Hongdae Problem

No more curfew and off limits areas are needed in places like Hongdae in Seoul anymore, courtesy of some brilliant scientists in Japan.  These scientists have discovered a spray that has the potential to allow foreigners and GIs to safely intermingle once again with the Korean citizens of night club areas like Hongdae.

The Axe body deodorant spray causes Japanese females to immediately swarm towards Japanese men wearing this spray.  Just look at these Japanese Maiko fleeing from this hapless foreigner when a Japanese man wearing the spray rides by on a bicycle:

If Axe can make a spray that can cause Maiko to flee those big, bad, stinky foreigners in Japan than surely they can make a spray that would cause those naive, innocent Korean girls in Hongdae to flee the evil, drunk GIs and into the warm embraces of the Axe spray wearing, gentle, decent, kind Korean men that frequent the Hongdae area.

Every soldier knows the Hongdae off limits order is not about "force protection reasons", but about keeping he big, bad foreigners away from Korean women, so here is a way to do it.  The police in Hongdae should be armed with this spray.  As soon as they see a helpless Korean woman talking to a foreigner the police should swoop in and spray the nearest Korean man in order to protect the naive, innocent women of Hongdae.  Peace and joy will return to the streets of Hongdae ironically enough due to the invention of somebody even worse than those big, bad, stink foreigners; the white washing of history, Dokdo denying, not quite as stinky, Japanese.
